The narratives around D'Angelo Russell this season:
* WCF this, WCF that.
* Shouldn't even start over Gabe Vincent
*Not even a Top 4 option 😭😭
* Glorified Sixth Man
* Inconsistent! Hot streak won't last
*Negative asset
*Trade for Dejounte Murray/Zach Lavine pic.twitter.com/PtdPtx1EHn— Coach Dom 🏀🏀 (@DominickNBA) March 23, 2024

Hindsight is always 20/20 but this is exactly why a front office can’t allow fans, bloggers, & “experts” to influence their decision making. Most of the criticism of D.Russell is based on the past performance of his entire career up until a coupla months ago. But the price was determined to be too costly (picks & additional players) to make a move. There’s a school of thought that the threat of being shipped off actually helped him get focused and realize that it’s a privilege to play in the LA market. I tend to defer to the coaches & management because they know & see things that the rest of us don’t. The revelation about why Rui wasn’t getting on the court earlier in the season is a prime example. While everybody was calling D.Ham an idiot, Rui wasn’t doing what the coaches were asking of him. So yeah…you’re gonna sit until you get with the program.

There’s obviously no question that we lack much of the inside information that the coaches and front office have, not even counting that they work in this area their entire lives while we’re just fans. Full-time professionals vs. hobby-time amateurs.
Of course, the other side is these guys seem to make so many obvious mistakes when it comes to Buss, Pelinka, and Ham that how can you NOT question some of their decisions. Bottom line, there have been teams and times when I did trust ownership, front office, and coaching of my Lakers. Now’s not one of them.

It’s easy to call out mistakes after they’re in the rear view mirror. Just on this very site we were endlessly bombarded with calls to ditch 3 rotation players plus draft capital to get Murray. Nobody’s gonna get every decision correct…

That’s true. But then you have decisions like letting Caruso walk or trading for Russ that make you shake your head and wonder.

But…check the Clipps record before Russ got hurt & after; he’s a key piece to what they do even though he had been written off. Sometimes sh!t works out and sometimes it just doesn’t.

Different situation than when he was making max money as a Laker. Was always a big fan of the effort Russ makes. Wish him well always.

I seem to recall Dr Buss trading Shaq without getting run out of town. Fan criticism amounts to nearly blind hindsight. As they make their best decisions and live with the results, so must we. I liked Caruso too, but Reaves replaced him. And I always thought the Russ trade was questionable, and hated to lose Kuzma, but LeBron and AD lobbied for it. To get back to Dlo, I’m glad he’s shooting the 3s and not Westbrook 🙂

Where’s the lie? Maybe the trade part because he doesn’t make enough to trade for Lavine. If ATL would’ve taken him and a 1st for Murray, he’d have been long gone.
