    Aloha,

As both the trade deadline and buyout season approaches I’m left with this uneasy feeling that there won’t be any moves available that can significantly improve the Lakers. There are a couple of reasons for my lack of optimism. The NBA made two changes that probably will change this time of year forever. First they lowered the odds for a tanking team gaining a top 3 pick by being awful. With no reward more teams will try to win. The 2nd is the play in format. In the past you might have 10 teams vying for the playoffs. This year there are 13 teams with a realistic shot of making the 10 team playoffs. Both the Kings and the Pelicans are currently on the outside looking in but are hungry to make the playoffs and have reasonable shots at making it.

These two things mean, first there will not be as many rebuilding teams dangling vets to try and gain assets. And 2nd this increases the competition for difference makers that do hit the open market. And the same things applies for the buyout market. Fewer vets hitting the market and more competition for those that do. This will make it extremely difficult for the Lakers to land a real difference maker with there
    Limited resources.

Which brings me to Stanley. Sometimes you just get lucky. He had signed with the Bulls but went into Covid protocols and never played for them. He fell to the Lakers and he just might be the missing piece we have needed. He maybe better then trade or buyout options available. His defense up to this point has been outstanding. At 6’ 7” he has the size to guard big wings, power forwards and even centers as big as Rudy. His offense isn’t great but it’s been better than anticipated and he does one thing that has been lacking. He moves without the ball.

Stanley kind of reminds me of KCP. KCP like Stanley was also a high draft pick that never lived up to expectations. But he has become an excellent role player with his defense. Stanley’s offense has never caught up with the defense that made him a lottery pick. But while other teams gave up on him being a star the Lakers only need him to star in a role. Which I believe he is capable of. Stanley has shown me more then Bazemore or Trevor has. While Trevor might improve as he rounds into shape I don’t believe he can be better for this team than Stanley. For the reasons mentioned above it would be stupid not to sign him for the rest of this year and next. And if a buyout candidate comes along we can cut Bazemore or DJ. Just don’t be cheap Jeanie, sign him, we need this guy.

THT is in the unenviable position of being one of our few trade chips. He is the center of every trade imaginable. Unfortunately like most of the writers out there agree that he won’t be enough to land a big name. And names like Terrance Ross and Eric Gordon doesn’t move the needle for me. If the Lakers truly want to trade THT the best thing they can do is wait. Hopefully he can become consistently good over the 2nd half and raise his trade value. We just won’t get much of a return if we trade him now.

It also occurred to me today that we may actually have Nunn for next year. He has a player option and if he doesn’t play or comes back late he might be forced to exercise it in a tight free agent Market.

I would love to keep Malik but it would probably take Westbrook opting out and signing a 3 to 4 year deal for around 25mil. He could opt in but he might not get much the following year. So we will have to wait to see how that plays out.

For now if we are going to have a shot in the playoffs we need to get healthy, sign Stanley
And then play with the same energy and sense of urgency that he plays with.

Odds and ends and Stanley Too

    Aloha,

Of course Franks is on the hot seat, even though the there was continuity issues coupled with a revolving door of players, the lack of energy this team has played with for much of the season is unforgivable. I can get past his love of the twin towers concept and I can even look past his inability to create looks for 3 point shooters but the lack of energy is something that as a coach he can not allow to happen.

But that seat is actually a long bench with room for many. You can start with Magic. Yes the same Magic that tweeted his disappointment with the team. Many of his blunders still haunt this franchise today. Everything from using DLO at the height of his trade value to dump salary, which of course he admitted was a mistake , to drafting Lonzo instead of Tatum, the staff favorite, to letting Randle walk for nothing, to dumping promising young players like Thomas Bryan’s and Zubac for cap space that was never used. Imagine if we would have had Tatum, Dlo, Randle, BI, Kuzma, Bryant and Zubac available when we traded for AD, we certainly would have a few valuable pieces left to develop or trade.

And then there is Jeanie pinching penny’s like a small market team. It is supposed to be all about championships. Hopefully she won’t let Stanley walk to save a few bucks.

This brings us too our current roster construction. A 3 star model is very difficult. You almost always have had to draft at least one star. The Nets are the exception not the rule. And they had to get lucky because the Rockets turned down Simmons for Harden just to spite Morey and Harden.

Since Dr Buss the Lakers have always been a star driven franchise but what our championship teams had in common was star role players. Rob forgot that part . The 3 stars also have to fit together, Rob forgot that part as well.

Russ was supposed to take the playmaking burden off of LeBron but they forgot one thing. LeBron is going to be LeBron. We would have been better off with a secondary ball handler like Caruso who played well with LeBron then a true point guard. I know we panicked last year because of injuries but we haven’t been any better with Russ and if LeBron or AD were to go down in the playoffs like last year, it wouldn’t matter if we had a 3rd star or not.

We have had a massive turnover in personnel since LeBron arrived. There has been little continuity that has made all the injuries even more glaring since this team has never played together.

LeBron maybe the GOAT but GM LeBron isn’t very skilled. Perhaps he feels he is so good that he can make any player fit. That’s not the case. He is also more concerned with resume than fit. And this lack of player evaluation has hurt every franchise he’s played for.

AD and until this year has refused to play the 5. Even though he is one of the best centers in the game. We won a ring with him at center. I don’t buy the argument that he gets too beat up inside. 80% of the centers in the league would have been fours back in the day. AD is as big or bigger then most centers. This team might have a different look if AD had agreed to play center last year.

This team would be a true contender if we had added Guys like Malik, Melo and eventually Nunn to the players we shipped out or let walk. Even Wes is thriving with the Bucks. A deep team with star role players would have been the much better option to our failed 3 star model.

You don’t get do overs in the NBA but going forward my only hope is we don’t compound our problems with more stupid moves.

    • Great stuff, I like how you connect the dots back to some of the missteps of the previous GM. I’ve been on a similar bent these days. It’s easy to see the Lakers as being spendy: they went out and offered LBJ a max contract from minute one of free agency, we have a “big three” trio of high money (also cap destroying) contracts and even hard-capped ourselves a season ago. The Lakers have, for most of their time under a Buss or another, functioned as the most popular small market team of all time.

Frank has his drawbacks, I have been a 50/50 Vogel supporter from day one when he was the 4th choice. I love how he approaches the defensive aspect of NBA basketball. I do not in any way like how he caters to superstars on offense. But it’s hard to pin what all of what ails us on Frank simply because of the moves Rob has made over the last couple seasons. Granted, those have had at least a cursory (at best) nod of approval from the coach and likely LBJ and AD, but ultimately these are the teams Rob has built. These are my 3 worst Rob moves:

-Trading Green for Schroeder at the cost of a valuable first round draft pick only to let Schroeder walk? That’s draft insanity and wasteful on every front. Penny pinching doesn’t begin to make it sound good. That’s juts bad GMing. Green was either a perfect fit for us (my still to this day opinion) or a player we needed to do a lot better job or recouping the investment we made in. Ultimately that money became absolutely nothing. No pick, no trade exception, nothing.

-Letting Caruso walk for nothing. Again, you can argue that Caruso may not have helped this team much given our lack of a center for him to help funnel his man into. that’s what AC (and guys like Green and Rondo) do best. They don’t “stop the ball” they gum it up and help to force bad shots. Caruso was always good for picking up a charge and a steal or two, as well. Same as Green, ultimately: no exception, no draft compensation, no capable replacement…just nada.

-The penultimate one though has just gotta be letting Julius Randle walk for nothing. I just…it doesn’t make sense from any standpoint except for keeping the team cost down. So, as a result, we as lifelong fans begin to discover that indeed it is not all about winning banners but also about not breaking the piggy bank. So the mega TV deal, all the sponsorships, all the outreach…can’t take a year or two every 5-7 seasons of paying the luxury tax? Nope, do not get that one at all.

So, for all our late-round draft success and scouting acumen (which has been great, don’t get me wrong) we’ve basically let a lot of those dues walk for nothing. So, while the Luol Deng/Timofey Mosgov kind of deals were ludicrous and awful in and of themselves, Jimbo and Mitch did a better job of getting value back.

      • Thanks guys. Magic’s tweet really got to me. The failure that this team is so far this season has been a long time in the making. Robs stab at damage control with proclaiming that it was either THT or Alex was total bunk. We could have kept both. Jeanie just cheaped out. Frank is a defensive guru but Rob totally over estimated what Frank could do with the pieces he gave him. Perhaps the defense can become functional but this team won a ring with defense and probably could have won last year without the injuries as well. Considering we could have added the same offensive pieces we did this year to last years defenders I think Rob is more to blame then Frank. But Robs not going to fire himself.

    Aloha,

Game ball to Stanley! The Lakers have to sign this guy into that open roster spot. And if they are smart they give him a 2nd year even if it’s a team option.

We finally saw some defensive energy against the number on offense in the league and It was
our young guys that actually won this game. LeBron was the only starter with a plus. +11.

    Stanley +18
    Malik +17
    THT +15
    Austin +13
They brought energy to both sides of the ball. It maybe the young guys that will turn this season around. With AD cleared for contact and a Nunn getting closer this old team just might have a couple more younger guys to energize this team.

    Stanley!

Our role players continue to impress. Kuz continues to build his case for most improved with a 15 point 16 board, 4 assists, 3 blocks and a steal game. KCP chipped in 14 points, while Harrell added 18 points and 7 boards! What a great group, oh… never mind. But hey we got Russ! 👍

Great play from our role players!

    • Kuz has more double-doubles than KAT, Embiid, Luka, Tatum, KD and LeBron this season.

    • What comes first? The Fire Pelinka or Fire Frank signs?

      • In my opinion Frank has been dealt the dud. If he does have input (which…honestly…I kinda doubt he does) then he, too should get canned this summer. But Rob, and the ownership, need to hold themselves more accountable for not using what assets we had going into free agency better. To not get even a trade exception for Caruso, let alone letting him walk, was a travesty in every measurable way. Even letting DS walk for nothing and not maybe swallowing a little pride and helping him find a S&T scenario (which by everything I’ve read we basically stopped taking calls from his agent) that could have netted us another useful player is an example of how the penny-pinching has undercut and defined everything about this season.

It’s sad that one of the franchises consistently ranked as the most valuable spends like a small market team.

        • Frank has his (numerous) faults but on the roster construction I have hard time hanging that on him. Now, what we’ve done with said roster, how he doesn’t seem to be able to reach the team unless it’s via players like Rondo and Dudley…that’s a horse of a different color and a reason he could be looking for another job if this season to go as it has.

    Aloha,

We suck. I remember the days when we were losing with all the young guys.I enjoyed watching that group much more than this one. They lost a lot, but they generally played and and often kept it close against often superior teams. I think we won 3 of 4 one year against the Warriors. This team gets blown out by mediocre teams.l, because we just can’t seem to bring enough energy.

Normally you can point to one or two guys that played well. Not this time. This was a group effort from the coaching staff down. Well perhaps Dwight was okay.

You can start with the coaching staff and their total lack of in game adjustments. Stu said something that I agree with. He said he wouldn’t have doubled Jokic. He would have let him get his points. Instead he had 13 assists in 28 minutes, most of them lay ups or 3’s.

When you are a great defensive team you can have an off offense and stay in the game. When your defense sucks you have score a lot and it’s like the coaching staff has no clue how to make that happen.

Dwight was punishing him in the 1st quarter. Dwight is quicker than the Joker and I would have liked to see us play through him more. Perhaps he could have gotten the Joker in foul trouble.

Malik got 5 shots, one from 3. Malik is a very good playmaker but was the game plan? “Hey I know Malik is our hottest shooter but let’s fool them and make him a playmaker “ Right. I can’t believe that that the coaching staff would not figure out a way to get our hottest shooter more than 5 shots.

And it wasn’t just Malik no one on the team got more than a handful of shots as LeBron and Russ got nearly half the shots.
What we saw tonight was LeBron ball. That’s when LeBron has the ball and everyone watches. And we saw old LeBron again. Old LeBron is when LeBron settles. He’s 5 for 21 from 3 over the last 2 games and like last game he had quite a few momentum killing missed 3’s.

I could go down and critique every player but I really don’t want to devote two hours to a game like tonight. I will say that while it’s always up to the players to perform, this coaching staff doesn’t seem to have a clue.

    Embarrassing, ugly, pathetic, sad etc

    • Nothing more to say. If it had not been for the podcast, I would have switched to NetFlix early in the third quarter. It’s not fun or why you root when your favorite team becomes too painful to watch.

Time for Jeanie to demand action and give Rob full reign and budget to do whatever he can to reverse this situation. No more cheaping out, Jeanie. You owe the fans at least that.

Truth is the stress and chaos put on the franchise as a result of the Russell Westbook experiement is close to destroying the chemistry and confidence of this team.

Something has to be done. Something big and bold. Otherwise, we’re in for death by a million cuts over the next couple of months. The patient is on death row. Where is the doctor?

    • There has been a major feeling of disconnect this season. Started in the summer and here we are still not looking like a whole, functioning (functional?) team. Maybe a trade fixes that? Maybe getting the major cogs healthy and in the court fixes that? Maybe something were not privy to in a film session or practice fixes that? Something’s gotta give tho.

    Aloha,

Russ the season for the Laker faithful to dream of that mega trade that wins a title. And and of course it would be amazing. But I don’t see a package of THT, Nunn and that distant 1st rounder is going to land us a big star. I will never say never and I would be ecstatic if it did, but very pragmatic and I just don’t see it.

Now we do have additional sweeteners that we could add beyond 2nd round picks. Malik has been playing like a star and Austin is that high IQ glue guy that every team covers. But the question is by adding those two to a trade for one player make us better?

THT has been up and down this year but is becoming more consistent. Nunn was declared one of the steals of free agency and the talk of training camp. I have no doubt that he will be very good for us down the stretch. Of course is playing like a star and Austin is becoming more valuable by the game.

Now Turner has been mentioned as a player of interest for us. Would his defense and rebounding improve is, or would keeping our guys and playing AD at 5 be the better move. Same with Grant , are we better giving up our young assets or would we be better landing him.

My answer is, the more we have to add to a trade, the less impact that trade has on improving the team. And unfortunately if we want a star it’s going to cost us more then THT and Nunn.

    The law of diminishing returns

    Aloha,

The Hawks traded Cam Reddish to the Knicks today. Reddish is the kind of player the Lakers could have really used. A long defender that can guard 2 through 5 with a decent 3 point shot. The Knicks sent Kevin Knox to the Hawks. Knox has been a disappointment for the Knicks but the Hawks received what they wanted most. A first round pick in this years draft.

And there lays the rub for the Lakers. Nunn would have been a great fit for the Hawks but the Lakers lack draft capital. Draft picks can grease the wheels for trades when you don’t have good players to offer. THT and Nunn are decent players but not good enough without draft picks when you are talking about the star players that have been attached to the Lakers.

The trade deadline period is a wonderful time for journalists and there is not a better click bait team in the NBA then the Lakers. So we will continue to see a variety of far fetched trade proposals and rumors.

Another problem for the Lakers is the stars are all under contract for at least another year. You usually see a team land a star with an underwhelming package when it’s a contract year and the trading team doesn’t want to lose the player for nothing. That’s not the case here. Teams can hold onto their star player and try again in the summer if they don’t receive a trade offer they like.

We here the Lakers are interested in in certain players and I’m sure Robb is on the phone with everyone. But our lack of draft capital and only a couple of decent players are going to hurt us.

I have seen some strange trades and I will never say never but the key for me is if we hear that another team is interested in some of our assets then I will pay attention. That hasn’t happened So far the rumors are all one sided and I’m really not anticipating a miracle trade to bail us out.

    On Trades

    Aloha

Well another loss to a bad team. So what’s new? We just can not seem to get it together. It seems like one can just post the same thing over and over again. Just a few thoughts, ya pretty much the same as usual.

Defense of course. Non existent transition defense and 70, yes 70 points in the paint. I thought Frank has not been doing a very good job with in game adjustments. We needed a shot blocker in more. Dwight was +9 in his 15 minutes. When there was such a size difference Dwight should have been on the court at least another 10.

We do not have a big 3. Westbrook just has not played like a star player. He’s been good at times but rarely has he looked like a star. Tonight he was awful. He does rebound and he can muck up a play on defense occasionally but the guy can’t keep players in front of him. And it would be okay if he made it up on offense but he was even worse. 2-14 with plenty more missed shot at the rim. And after the Laker cut it to 4 with a little more then minute. Then we get a rare stop! So what should we do? Perhaps we look for Malik or Austin who had combined for 10 for 17 from 3? No something better. Give the ball to LeBron and let him attract the rim? No! Russ decided to take a 3. Of course he missed again to add to his previous 4 misses from 3. Long rebound, Kings run out for a transition 3. Game over. Russ is now 8 for 40 from field over his last 3 games. AD or no AD we will not win a championship if Russ doesn’t improve.

It’s not often that a player scores 34 and has a sub par game but I thought LeBron did. He was able to get to the rim but settled way to much for 3’s. 3 for 13 from 3. He kind of fueled the Kings run when they cut into our 14 point lead. He missed 3 straight 3 point shots and the Kings scored each time. And 5 for 10 from the free throw line. Defensively he made some good plays inside but was constantly late on his close outs.

So a couple of good things. Malik was 6 for 9 from 3 for 22 points. It’s a shame that he got into foul trouble and only played 29 minutes.

I thought Austin had the best all around game tonight. He score 19 but I thought he was the only guy on the team that gave 100% on the defensive end. Another gem for our scouting department.

So considering how we have played so far it leaves me with one important question. What’s the protection on our first round pick this summer?

    I’m so tired of this

    Aloha,

Well we are half way through the season and we are no closer to knowing our potential then we were the first day of training camp. Of course our task has been challenging with a seemingly never ending revolving door of players, making any kind of continuity nearly impossible. And with our big 3 playing only a few games together, we really can’t begin to judge how that will look once we are healthy and have a chance to play a consistent rotation. I guess that’s where I find my optimism. We haven’t really been together enough to develop a rotation or an identity. But then again, finding hope in the unknown is kind of sad.

But yesterdays game was another example of why we have lost as many games as we have. We came out flat, with no energy. I had been encouraged lately because we had been playing with energy, even in the losses but last night pointed out one thing that can be corrected. Playing hard every night.

Of course we are seeing the annual click bait trade proposals popping up on the web, but without a high energy level it wouldn’t matter even if we landed one of those pipe dream trades.

As I’ve posted before I find swinging a trade for a star player highly unlikely. Many of the teams that are also listed have more to offer then we do. Our biggest issue is draft capital. You can grease the wheels more with draft picks. I will never say never to a weird trade, I remember Pau, but all things point to perhaps small trades at best. We have two small trade exceptions and some 2nd rounders that may come in handy. I don’t know if there will be much help on the buyout market as well. With the play in tournament, there are just to many teams with a chance to get in. Im not seeing them cutting vets that could help.

So what can we do besides playing with more energy. Get healthy of course. AD coming back is a must for us to have any chance. And he has to look more like bubble AD than what we have seen this year. His stat line has looked okay but he’s shooting has fallen way off and the eye test shows me that he’s just not the same. I remember that TWolves game where Cat destroyed him. He has to be much better then that.

Nunn coming back will in itself be huge. He was the talk of training camp with his defense. He also has a 3 level offensive game. I could see him replacing Avery in the starting line up and playing the point when Russ rests. It sounds like he’s close. The sooner the better.

While we are the oldest team in the league, our rotation could actually be fairly young . Monk, THT, Reeves, Nunn and Stanley gives us 5 sets of young legs to go with the Vets. So the big issue here will be consistency. Except for Nunn of course, all have shown us some real potential. With a healthy line up and time to know their roles and gel, I believe they could be an excellent supporting group. And if Malik proves to be real, he could take a lot of pressure off of Russ to score. He could in a sense be that star acquisition everyone yearns for.

We also need more consistency from vets like Melo, Trevor and Ellington. I will give Trevor a pass, this is still his training camp. But Wayne played himself out of the rotation. It was good to see him knock down some shots against the Griz even if it was against their Subs. Melo also needs to find some consistency. He’s either hot or cold but rarely in the middle. I would take more middle then his rollercoaster ride. And then there is Russ, volumes have been written about him, so I’ll just say he needs to find consistency more then any one else on the team. He was brought in to help carry the load to help LeBron and step up when there is an injury to another star. So far he’s done neither. Like AD he has to be better for us to have a chance.

One interesting thing for me and something that is encouraging is LeBron at the 5, even though like Jamie pointed out Stanley has been playing more 5 than LeBron. AD as a big ball line up and LeBron leading the small ball group, along with Dwight when a banger is called for gives us what might be the best center rotation in the league. Now if could solve our lack of size at forward that would be huge. Perhaps with some reps, Stanley can fill that role.

So if anyone is looking for any specific suggestions, well I have none and I won’t until we are healthy and have had time to play together. Then we can see how we look.

L.A.’s most-used starting lineup this season is already the current group of Westbrook, Bradley, Monk, Johnson (on 2nd 10-day deal) and LeBron, at 59 minutes.

To compare, Utah’s starters have played an NBA-high 446 minutes together; Phoenix, 396; and GSW (sans Klay) 347.

This is what I’m talking about.

    • We are entering a stretch of both higher competitive pedigree and kind of make or break for the season.

We are every bit the .500-ish team we look like, porous paint defense because we have no useful size, porous perimeter defenders because we’re playing guys who are learning defense in prime roles (except Bradley who is no spring chicken at this point) and streaky shooting.

We’re also overly reliant on the greatness LBJ continues to deliver. Woe to all if that dries up. No good way to solve these issues except to keep working at them and hoping for enough improvement to stay competitive.

When AD gets back we’ll have a better defense. Same goes for Nunn, if he’s even on the team when he takes the court this season. With no timeline for his return it makes me think it won’t happen until after 1/15 so it’s also quite possible he may never see the floor in a Laker uni which is an odd thing to say about a guy we had pinned so much hope on.

Anyhow, the Nunn situation really, for me, sums up the Laker season: guy brought in to do something never plays for us and is the reason we get another guy who does a few other things and hopefully is better than the guys we shipped out? No guarantees so I’m more and more of the opinion to let it ride as-is unless a trade for a true difference maker in the paint materializes and doesn’t involve us mortgaging what future we have left in totality. Everything about this season has been a whackadoo tilt-a-whirl from the off-season cheap out, to the injuries, to COVID re-decimating the league to all of it being kind of predictable based on the players we brought in. The defense was always going to be a challenge, didn’t think it would be this challenging. The offense was always going to come and go, didn’t expect to see games where essentially the whole team other than a couple dudes no-showed, and so on.

Anyhow, I think we’re a .500-ish team right given that AD is out. What his WAR (wins above replacement)? That’s a big question. Same goes for Nunn. If they add a win or two over replacement, and I think they’re good for at least that, we have a shot at the 6…maybe 5 but I kinda doubt it…seed. All that really matters is avoiding the playin and hoping we get a good matchup early to find our sea legs against. If it’s the Suns I think they’ll run us off the floor. Better to face them later in the playoffs if at all possible. Would rather face any team but Phoenix right now. They’re on fire and they have the MiraclePlay trainging staff that adds length to anyone’s career, somehow.

      Wish we had the same.

    • Aloha, Michael,

And Welcome to the Lakerholics.Com Team, our equivalent of Cryto.Com Arena. I was sorry to see Sean leave but thrilled at the opportunity to finally get you to join our team. For those who don’t know, I’ve been after Michael to become part of the team for years now. Big Plus/Minus for Lakerholics.Com

Anyway, great inaugural post as we completed the first 41 of our 82 game NBA season. I share your optimism despite the record and last night’s dispiriting loss to the very unappreciated and talented Memphis Grizzlies. My take at the halfway point is pretty much the same as yours. We are what we are until we prove differently, which we haven’t done. Nor are we the favorites.

But while we haven’t proven via wins that we’ve made progress, I do think the last stretch of games has finally given us a solid glimpse of what this team’s identity and possible ceiling are. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies game also showed us what our possible floor is even with the best player on the planet in LeBron. Some losses aren’t team losses. This one was for sure a team loss.

Where we differ is I’m a firm believer that we not only have to make a major move to have realistic shot at winning #18 this season but we also have the will and assets to pull off a major trade. THT, Nunn, and the 2027 pick have serious value. If needed, Monk and Reaves also have great value and we could give the Pelicans a second rounder to eliminate one of the pick swaps so we could offer two first round picks. The targets? Myles Turner or Jerami Grant.

What happened last night was hopefully one of those unexplainable anomalies that happen almost every night in the NBA: A team that’s been playing well and shooting lights out comes out and lays an egg and nobody on the team other than LeBron can make a basket. We saw this with flawed lineups earlier this season but this was different. I think a lot of the blame, if you can call it that, goes to the Memphis Grizzlies, who wanted to prove something and had the size, athleticism, and talent we hadn’t recently faced and schooled us. Nothing to do but file, flush, and take it out on the Kings.

    • I’ve noticed Russ’s production going down as his turnovers have as well Bubba. But who’ hands would you rather have ball in, Russ or LeBron? That’s the piece that needs to be figured out. My biggest problem is Russ hasn’t really been taking over when LeBron sits. That’s what he brought in for. That’s been the biggest disappointment.

    Aloha,

Usually by this time of year, I generally have had an idea of how good the Lakers are. Last year we got off to a great start and played enough games together before the injury bug hit to have an idea of how good we could be. This year the injuries began in training camp and it’s been a revolving door of players ever since. So how good can this team be? I have no idea. The big 3 have only played together a hand full of games and all of the role players have missed time.

Still there have been enough glimpses of promise to give me some hope. So what needs to happen? A lot of things. I won’t even mention LeBron because he is the one constant that if healthy will just do what he does.

1st 2nd and 3rd AD has to come back from injury and avoid another injury the rest of the year. His sprained MCL will be reevaluated in another week or so. With luck he will be cleared and can be back on the court by the end of the month. But he has to be more then he was prior to the injury. His jump shot has been inconsistent and his 3 ball has fallen off a cliff. The good news is his dominance in the paint. Now that it’s apparent that we are moving away from an old school starting a center it’s going to be a plus having AD at the 5 moving forward.

One thing I’ve noticed over the last few weeks, is we are finally playing with energy. We’ve lost so many games for lack of energy that we really dug a hole. We need to keep the energy level.

I don’t believe we have trade chips to land a star player, there maybe a small deal or a buy out player but for the most part we will need find the answers with this group. Stanley might help fill our biggest need, a versatile defender with size.

That said we really need Malik to continue this hot streak. And what’s been impressive is he is playing at a much higher level then we have seen.

THT has had a rough start with injuries and Covid. Frank made a few comments that hinted that THT might have had some symptoms and is now getting back. Hopefully that’s true, a consistent THT will go a long way in turning this season around.

Getting Nunn back can be huge. He was having a great training camp before he was injured. On offense he gives us another 3 level scorer, a playmaker and on defense a quality on ball defender. Getting him back could be the same as a trade bringing in new talent.

We are solid at guard, set at the 5 with LeBron, AD and Dwight. If Stanley continues to play well he could fill are biggest remaining hole.

We still have a lot of work to do. Our defense has to improve and we have to solve our defensive rebound problem. But if we can stay healthy and learn to play together, we still have enough time to turn it around. It’s so important to win all of our winnable games until AD returns.

So where the hell are we anyway?

    • Aloha, Michael. Great post. Love your optimism and positive thinking.

I agree 100% with you that the Lakers are in a good position right now, which is surprising considering everything that’s gone down in the team’s first 39 games with injuries and Covid.

It’s amazing what three in a row and four out of five wins will do for the team’s and it’s fans’ outlook. But the sudden optimism is built on critical positive developments we’ve seen over the last five games.

LeBron at the five is at the heart of the Lakers’ and LeBron’s renaissance. After being derailed by Anthony Davis’ injury, the Lakers were finally forced to play LeBron at the five and ther rest is history.

Credit Lakers head coach Frank Vogel, who embraced the results of LeBron at the five and committed that AD and LeBron would be the team’s primary centers going forward, with a touch of Dwight.

The continued excellent play by Melo, Monk, Reaves, Bradley, and Howard supported great play by superstars James and Westbrook showed everybody how good the Lakers could be.

Suddenly, solutions emerged. LeBron James at center. Monk as starting shooting guard. Johnson as big wing defender. Reaves as the guy who makes every lineup better.

I still think the Lakers are one more player away from being a true championship contender. They need a young, physical 6′ 8″ to 6′ 11″ stretch four or five to give them more size, defense, and versatility. Cam Reddish could be that player. Or Myles Turner, Christian Wood, Chris Bouchet, Jerami Grant, or Harrison Barnes.

For sure though, the murky clouds hovering over the Lakers future thinned and separated and things suddenly look much better than they did just a few games ago. Let’s hope we’re really building something right now. Need to beat the Hawks on Friday night.

    • We’re exactly where we are. Nobody saw the events unfolding as they have and yet that’s the road we’re on, regardless of intent, availability or anything else we want to try and conform this season to. We’re on a ride with the end not yet in sight.

The defense was always going to be an issue, especially in the regular season. We struggle more against young teams than I anticipated and I think that’s mostly due to having a lot of older players on the roster and being under-sized in general.

The rebounding will be an issue when we’re small. James isn’t Draymond Green, he’s more of an orchestrator, finisher and attacker than Green is. Russ needs to keep attacking the glass and Johnson should help a little.

The young guys who have been available are playing like, well, young guys. Good one game, gone the next. It’s difficult to be consistently good in pro sports, to say nothing of being consistently great. It ain’t easy. So it’s not too surprising that we’ve lacked consistency from those dudes.

AD has always been and will indeed be the key to any sustained success this team can muster. His defense is the key to unlocking so much of the potential on this squad, moreso in years past simply because of the personnel he’s surrounded by. His scoring inside, on this team, is more important to me than his outside shot. As long as he takes them when they’re there I’m cool with it. It would be nice if he was making more.

At any rate, if Russ, LeBron, AD and Melo are healthy I like our chances against any team in a 7 game series. Just need to get a couple other guys going in that case and leave the winning to the professionals.

The Lakers will likely sign small ball big man Stanley Johnson to a 10-day contract on Thursday, league sources told ESPN. Johnson, 25, recently completed a 10-day hardship exemption contract with LAL and the SoCal native made an impact with his on-ball defense and toughness

    • Smart move. Sign him for 2 10-days and then for rest of season. Saves money and taxes over signing him now for rest of season.

    Aloha,

Well that’s 3 in a row and 4 of the 5. While the Kings haven’t been winning they do have some talent and they had most of their team available. Just a couple of thoughts.

The team gave Dwight the game ball and for good reason. The complexion of the game changed when he came in. A 14, 14 double double was needed. The kings had 9 offensive boards but only one on Dwight’s watch and Dwight had 7 offensive boards himself. When the kings are playing as big as they were we needed a big body in there, especially when LeBron rested. While playing super small, it’s important to make adjustments when needed and it was needed.

THT had a great game, on both sides of the ball. And I think the key was, he slowed down and didn’t force anything. I know he was frustrated and was pressing. The 19 points was great but I really appreciated the 6 assists.

LeBron didn’t put on the cape until the 4th quarter. But once he did, it was game over.

Malik had another great game. There are all of these trade proposals for another star, that all these different writers come up with. Well if Malik keeps up, we have our star.

    Good Win

    • Aloha, Michael,

No doubt Dwight deserved a game ball tonight. He was great at both ends. Controlled the glass. Finished at the rim. Great double-double. Frank finally has the center rotation where it should be with LeBron and AD the primaries and Dwight off the bench and DJ DNP.

Monk is locking down the starting shooting guard over Reaves and Ellington. His offense is solid gold at all three levels and his defense has been better than advertised with his athleticism. I’m loving how our guards are breaking up bounce passes and logs off pick-and-rolls. Great defensive adjustments by coaching staff.

I think the rise of Monk and Reaves as well as the resurrection of Bradley have suddenly given the team hope that they may not need as much help from outside as originally thought. It was great also to see THT come through with a great game. Will it be enough?

I do think Monk is going to be a real star for us, maybe just for this year but a star for sure. While I still think we need more size and preferably a player like Turner, Wood, or Boucher to give us size, defensee, and a stretch five, I’m intrigued by what Kendrick Nunn could bring us. I still think THT is a tough fit on this team and should be traded but Nunn’s skillset and lefty handle could be something we don’t want to give up.

THT for Chris Boucher of the Raptors might be the kind of deal we need, although I still would try and pull off the THT + Nunn combo for Turner, Wood, Boucher, Grant, Bogdan, or Reddish. Just need one more big.

A thought occurred to me. One of the knocks against the Lakers this year was the age of the team. But once Nunn is back we may have an answer to that criticism. Nunn was considered one of the steals of free agency and he looked good in preseason. I also fully expect the Lakers to sign Stanley, his defensive intensity could take minutes from Trevor. Once these guys get to play together and gain some confidence and consistency we will have young legs we can sprinkle in with the vets.

    AD 28
    Nunn 26
    Johnson 25
    Monk 23
    Reeves 23
    THT 21

It could turn out that we may not be that old after all.

    Aloha

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s always nice to have a blow out win, even though Portland was dealing with injuries and Covid protocols like we have been, I’ll take it with a grain of salt. But what is more important it’s games like these that allows a team to find it’s rhythm. Every player that played, seemed play well and that can help build confidence. Just a few random thoughts.

LeBron at the 5 is a thing for sure. I still believe matchups will dictate when and how much we see it. The floor opens up for the offense and on defense we can switch everything. Still there are a few problems to be worked out. First and foremost is rebounding when we go small. Portland had 21 offensive rebounds. That just can’t happen against a good team. Also while LeBron is a great weak side shot blocker, he is not the rim protector that AD is, so we need to bring more help when players get in the paint.

Stanley Johnson. Wrap the guy up now. Since he was an emergency 10 day, we could actually offer him two more 10 day contracts. But the way he is playing isn’t going unnoticed. other teams might offer him a permanent roster spot. With Trevor back it gives us two guys with size. Which also helps our small ball line up. He doesn’t have score a lot. 10 to 12 points a game would be gravy. It’s his intense defense that we need. And at buyout time we have other guys we can cut to open up a spot if needed. Stanley falling into our laps could be a real difference maker. Like I’ve stated I have little confidence in any big trades happening. So Stanley could be the best difference maker we can acquire.

I have stated that I like Malik off the bench but I’m beginning to question that. Malik’s offense takes the pressure off of Russ to score. Russ can actually facilitate and pick his spots on offense instead of forcing it as he’s prone to do. It would be great to keep Malik next year but that may not be possible. The only possibility is the cap around the league. Only 4 teams have projected cap space. The year after we would have the space. Perhaps the MLE for a year? Unlikely but one can hope.

As mentioned above Russ as a facilitator first worked great last night. We have scoring punch on this team. Russ is much better when he’s not forcing his offense.

THT had an all around nice game last night. He had been lacking in confidence. Hopefully a game like this will help him to start regaining it. Wether you want to keep THT or trade him, he has to get that confidence back.

Nice to see Austin back. The kid just plays hard. Like Caruso, he is a testament to our scouting department. Now all they have to do is find two or three more like him.

This is a very important stretch of games coming up. The next 6 are winnable with 4 at home. AD’s sprained Mcl will be reevaluated around the 15th. If it’s good he could be back for the last week or so of the month. It’s important to win these games now.

Nice way to end the year.

    • Great post Michael and I agree on the Stanley Johnson front. Like Bradley you just want those guys to shoot the shots KeBron and Russ work to create for them. Make or miss, you have to shoot open shots or your toast in this league. How long LeBron sustain this? Anyone’s guess, I think he just wrapped up the December WC Player of the Month and he’s proving everyone (me included) wrong fir showing any doubts. Need to stay around the 5-6 seed until AD gets back

    • Aloha, Michael,
Happy New Year to you and yours.

It was great to end the year with what was undoubtedly our best game of the year. What Lakers fan doesn’t enjoy a good blow out. My wife doesn’t understand why we wouldn’t want a close win instead. How do you explain it to somebody who isn’t a true sports fan? Anyway, last night was more than just one win.

I love LeBron at the five. While I think there’s a case to be made for him to continue to start at the five when AD returns, I do expect Davis to start at the five once he’s back. But how we fare with LeBron at the five could change the dynamic since we’re still four to six weeks away from AD’s return. Something to keep an eye on. At some point, LeBron will become the Lakers starting center.

Vogel’s comments about the Lakers likely relying on AD and LeBron as their centers going forward was great news as it confirms the Lakers are committed to playing small ball with AD or LeBron at the five. What the announcement also implies is the Lakers will try to have LeBron or AD at the five for the entire game, which by its nature means less time together on the floor. That might be the best option because it means LeBron and Russ pairings and AD and Russ pairings.

You’re right that there may still be times when the Lakers want to start a big center like Dwight, which is why I still think there’s a chance the Lakers trade for Myles Turner, who would enable Frank to play his preferred two bigs and AD his preferred power forward while giving the Lakers the tools to go monster sized as well as small ball on steroids. Dwight played well last two games but we may need to find a younger bouncier center to go against Jokic and Embiid.

Stanley is the perfect fit for this team and the Lakers are a perfect fit for him. Great move to have him on the SB Lakers as it’s made his transition to the varsity a snap. I want him not to gamble as much as he’s failed to steal a pass numerous time which has resulted in wide open threes for the other team. He’s true small forward size with the weight to play the small ball four. While he’s not a great outside shooter, he’s competent from the corners and knows when not to shoot. We just traded Rondo for the roster spot for Stanley. I find it intriguing that the Lakers seem hesitant to guarantee the roster spot to Johnson. Letting him walk would be another Damian Jones. Unless the Lakers have bigger fish in mind or other moves that might require a roster spot. Come January 15, we’ll find out.

I’ve been in the same spot as you with Malik, having him slated along with Melo as our punch off the bench. I like your point about Monk allowing Russ to be more of a playmaker and less of a scorer. For me, that means Reaves comes off the bench, which could be good balance with Melo and shooters coming in. Need some defense off the bench because of so many offense-only players.

I have us winning the next six games before we meet Utah in the middle of January. That would give us a season high 7-game winning streak. Act like this is the team we have, so go out and win. AD and Nunn will be like a surprise midseason trade to push the team over the top. Test is does the team know this and can they go out and do it beginning Sunday. We have the players now so all we have to do is play the right way and win.
