The Cav’s are over the cap. They have to send salary back. I wonder who that will be. Or will there be a 3rd team involved?

    So who are we getting?

    • Because Rondo is in a vet minimum deal we can take back a non-guaranteed player or a player to be named later. While the Cavs are over the cap it essentially means they can trade a placeholder, in essence.

    • I hope it’s Ed Davis if it’s anyone though

    • Just read that we don’t have to bring anyone back. Probably a draft pick or 2 coming our way. This might be a Rondo for Stanley Johnson trade. He’s looked good but we needed a spot to sign him.

    • I always like Ed for his hustle Buba. But we really don’t need him. And at 32 he’s not the player he use to be. Stanley fills our biggest need, a defender with a little size that can guard bigger wings and Small forwards. I’ve seen Stanley guarding all 5 positions. Just remember how he looked hanging with Hardin.

    • These are the kind of moves I see us making. Filler for filler based on need. If we get a 2nd rounder for our troubles that would be awesome.

    • I’d still waive DAJ and keep Collison who I think has more in the tank than he’s shown. Stil, talking about spot minutes and cheerleaders in a playoff situation.

    Aloha,

One tool no one is talking about is the 2.7 mil trade exception that the Lakers have after the Gasol trade. Might be able to find a piece like Damien Jones of the Kings. We could send them a 2nd rounder for him. Would have to cut DJ but half the Kings roster are centers.

    Aloha,

There is an abundance of Laker centric trade speculation involving all over the web. I have seen too many weird trades so I will never say never but I think the chances of the Lakers landing a star in a trade are slim to none with our limited trade assets. I never turn to the trade machine first. The first things I do in looking into a trade is try and put myself in the shoes of the other teams GM.

First there are the rebuilding teams with a star. The Pistons have Grant for instance. A favorite target for Laker scribes. If I were the GM I would want drafts picks and young players. The Lakers are short on both. 2027 is the next time we can trade a 1st rounder. I’m asking myself, is my job secure enough to wait 5 years for a draft pick pay off? As for young players we only have two under contract beyond this year. THT is inconsistent and Austin’s sample size is small. Monk has shown promise but he’s a free agent. He spent 4 years in a rebuild and took less money to sign with a contender. If I’m the GM, I’m asking myself, what are the odds that he resigns for another 3 years of rebuild. Slim to none. And Nunn is 26, young by Lakers standards but old for a rebuild. Plus there is the whole resigning issue. I read that Grants injury might lower the asking price. But GM Michael knows that he is under contract and can be traded later if I don’t receive an offer I like.

Now there is also chatter about Turner and the Pacers. I have read that the Pacer are floating names out there to rebuild but I’ve also heard they may just want to upgrade to try to compete for a playoff spot. If they are looking to rebuild, then everything I wrote about the Pistons applies to Indy. If they are looking to upgrade, is THT a win now player? They already have Brogdon and Holiday at PG, would they even be interested in Nunn? As a matter of fact they have a lot of guards. How would more help?

Then there is trading Russ. There are not many situations where he helps a team, that can send back enough salary with players we would want. The only team that really fits the bill is the 76ers. The bad thing is, they have a list of 30 players and Russ isn’t on it. And I doubt they would want any of our other players we could throw in because of salary matching. The only way I see we could trade Westbrook to them is in a 3 way trade with another team. The kings for instance has shown interest in Simmons. We trade Russ to the 76ers, the Kings send the 76ers 1st rounders and the Kings send us say, Fox and Barnes. That would work with the Pistons as well. They get Simmons, we get Grant. There are more possibilities in a 3 way then there is a straight swap. As far as the Rich Paul factor getting him to the Lakers, you can forget that. Ben is under contract for 4 years. Rich as zero leverage. The 76ers will trade him whoever they want.

There may be a few small trades available. A Reddish for Nunn trade with the Hawks would benefit both teams but I’m afraid the chances of a blockbuster trade are slim to Nunn. 🙂

    Slim to none

    • Add in the fact that Nunn has yet to play and it’s an even thornier issue. I’m calling buyout market, at best.

    • I have to respectfully disagree with both you and Jamie, Michael. While it won’t be easy, I do see some legitimate opportunities for the Lakers to land Ben Simmons and/or Myles Turner. It may be wishful thinking that we could land both of them but I think there’s a good chance we could end up landing one of them.

First, I think Lakers fans always underestimate what their trading chips are worth. There’s a clear understanding and respect for the job the Lakers’ scouting department has done drafting and finding undrafted players who have NBA potential. Just look at all of the talented young former Lakers players around the league.

Second, other teams understand how difficult it is for role players to fit into a lineup with LeBron, AD, and Russ. They know the fit is very difficult and there will be teams who see potential jewels in talented young players like THT, Nunn, Monk, and Reaves.

Third, Russell Westbrook is playing well and there are situations where he can be the difference maker for a team like the Sixers or Celtics or Pacers or Pelicans. Most importantly, he opens the door to multiple team trades that are easier to get to work than staight trades between two teams.

Slim to Nunn should be changed to difficult but possible.

      • Difficult and improbable: Nunn-yet to play so why would a team gamble away a player who can suit up? Nunn’s name floats around as much as THT and yet nobody really seems to want address the “is he even going to play?” issue. Add in that the biggest raise he can get from the team he’s traded to is 20% and it’s even harder to see good talent shuttled out the door for him. THT is a legit prospect that might blossom in a different environment. Or he might end up like Kuzma 2.0 and turn out exactly what he looks like now: an un-even role-player who never quite manages the next step. Russ’s deal, once he (likely) opts in will have a lot more value after the season ends. Lastly I think Michael’s pint about a GM waiting 5 years for a pick to be useful is astute. While not worth nothing it’s not as valuable as it will be in a season or three. None of the above even takes into account that Rob has not made one in-season trade as a GM yet. While curious and likely a streak that ends eventually it makes me think Rob values the job-season growth more than maybe we give him credit for. The obvious argument to that is “well what about the Drummond debacle?” To which there is no satisfactory answer. That was a botch job.

        • With all due respect, Jamie, you’re taking a way too much of a gloom and doom approach to the value of our trading chips. THT just turned 21 and has great potential, especially to a team that has shooting and wants a young player with all-star potential at both ends of the court.

Same with Nunn, who is only 26-years old and in his 3rd NBA season. And yes, he only makes $5 million and doesn’t bring Bird Rights so would be best traded to a team with cap space to sign him to whatever deal it takes if he has a great second half of the season. There has also been no talk of his injury being career or season threatening. You’re starting to reach for reasons why he’s not a good trade asset.

I guess it’s just human nature that you think any trade proposed to help the Lakers won’t work because nobody wants the chips we have. Did you have the same attitude when we were trying to trade for Anthony Davis? Nobody wants Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, or the baby Lakers. I thought differently then and we turned that into AD. I think we can do the same with Russ, THT and Nunn.

I would hope at least that you would be rooting that we make great trade rather than moping and complaining about how screwed we are since this is the team we’re going to go down with. We’re the Lakers and I think we’re better than that. Leave that shit for the Flippers fans.

          • Just see a lot of factors working against us. I sure don’t see “All Star” potential when it. Ones to Talen, as I’ve been saying Nunn hasn’t played and there will be hurdles for any team to keep him past the season so you’re basically getting a couple months of guys who has yet to practice let alone play, and the pick isn’t worth much if one is being honest. It’ll be worth more in a couple seasons. It’s not that I’m hoping fir anything, just taking the same realistic approach to the situation I always do which, by the way, has not once resulted in me predicting a 70+ win season, a #1 seed or any other fly by night dream scenarios others invest time in. We don’t have a great platform to operate from on any front. Not the trade market, not the time front, not the internal solutions hope. We desperately need AD to miss as few games as possible and the handful of other teams struggling around the .500 mark to keep in struggling while we get healthy. It’s a question of when, not if, that this comes together as-is in my opinion so, honestly, I’m not even predicting a “big trade” of any kind whatsoever and certainly not before 1/15/2022.

            • Well, I always operate from a fan’s point of view during trade periods. So I’m proposing different strategies and targets to upgrade the team in obvious areas.

That’s totally different from predicting what’s realistically most likely to happen. I mean that formula only works for me when you’re always winning.

Anyway, yes, I do often predict great things to happen for the Lakers and through my lifetime I’ve been right an awful lot of the time. And wrong more often than not but that’s how it goes with predictions that are really wishes.

Anyway, I’ll keep highlighting the silver linings and you can keep casting the dark shadows. In the end, we both want the same thing: Lakers wins!

          • Lol, you did the same thing when Oladipo had yet to play: concocted epic scenarios by which we traded people who actually can play for him. It’s been half a decade of Myles Turner trades almost. You’ve traded fir just about every three point shooter in the league, most of whom have actually ended up in our team only for you to almost instantly write them off and find another perfect plug and play option when pro sports ain’t anything close to plug and play. So, if you don’t mind, forgive me if I don’t take every single trade proposal seriously because the volume is simply too high for me to do so. Especially when one “future All Star” trading chip still can’t even be traded for over 2 weeks and we should, ohhh I don’t know, see if his play improves? Or when/if Nunn takes the floor? Or even take the time waiting for AD to get back prior to the trade deadline to see if trading Russ makes sense given that the trio has okayed less than 3 games worth together. Lest we forget, but hell I’ll bring it up again, Rob has never made an in-season trade to date. Not for anyone. Many. Factors. Working. Against.

            • Hell, literally 2 days ago when I mildly critiqued THT’s game YOU called him a bust!!! Lol… So now, because of your infatuation with trading players, we should all take the mountain of trades you propose super duper seriously? C’mon man. Nobody trading for a bust so figure out what you’re talking about and then come calling dude.

            • LOL. Guilty as charged.

    • Wow I didn’t mean to start an argument. Lol. I like THT’s potential. We’ve seen flashes of it. He’s missed a lot of time due to injury and Covid so it’s been a rough start. That said a team is not going to trade a star player to us with THT as the center piece of that trade. THT is more of a secondary piece at this point. He might even work If we had more draft assets to offer. We don’t. And then there are guys like Malik and Nunn that could walk this summer. There would be a high possibility of that. A rebuild in a small market isn’t that appealing for a player. And with Nunn is his age. The Pistons are considering trading Grant because at 27 he doesn’t fit their other players time line. Nunn is 26. Young for the Lakers old for a rebuild.

      • LOL. Let’s see what happens. I hope for the Lakers sake that I’m right and you’re wrong. The Lakers need more than just getting to healthy to win a championship this season. They need two new starters at the least, although Reaves could be one.

The Lakers have two paths to rebuilding their starting lineup. Totally committing to small ball with AD at the five, which means going after a bigger wing like Jerami Grant, Harrison Barnes, or Cam Reddish, or going after a legitimate starting center like Myles Turner or Christian Wood so
AD can play his preferred four and Frank his preferred two bigs.

And I still contend on the side there will be a chance Philly cannot get anything better than Russ and may bend and offer Ben and filler to the Lakers for Russ. Don’t underestimate what a coup it would be for Rich Paul to get Ben Simmons to LA in a Klutch/Lakers Superstar Big Three. No better situation to redeem his brand and help LeBron’s and AD’s too.

    • Tom was worried about all the trades he wouldn’t be able to imagine all the way back when Caruso signed with Chicago. You can go back and see us roast him about in the LFB podcast.

    • Thanks buba, just trying to keep LT from veering wildly between “BUST” and “ All Star potential”. Gotta be some kind of middle ground…I dunno, maybe something like, oh I dunno, solid role-player?

    Aloha,

Basketball is a team game, and I generally don’t like to lay the blame for a loss on one guy, but tonight I will make an exception. We lost this game because of Russ. If he makes half the layups he missed we win. The missed dunk at the end was the killer. Down 3, he missed the jam, they score, ball game. And it wasn’t just his 4 for 20 night on offense, his defense was equally bad. He constantly lost track of Mills. Why he left Paddy on that dagger 3 to double for no reason. And it wasn’t just Mills, Harden stole his lunch money as well.

We had two bad quarters and and two good ones. Russ was generally off the court when we made our runs. And the stats show it. LeBron played 40 minutes and was a plus 9. Russ played 37 minutes and was a minus 23.

I thought we had enough from other guys to win. Malik was very impassive on both sides of the ball. After not picking up a basketball for over 10 days, he scored 20 with 42% from 3 and hustled on D. THT had a decent game but man I was impressed with Stanley Johnson. Harden played Ellington off the court. But whenever Stanley drew Harden he really made him work. You can’t shut Harden down but I thought Stanley slowed him down. Forced him into several turnovers and missed shots. If he keeps this up I hope we keep him. He has a little more size and at 25 has young legs, which we desperately need. They can sign him for a 2nd 10 day after this one. If this continues, I think we will need to cut someone because we need a guy the can guard both wings and small forwards.

I thought Melo played pretty well. He wasn’t hitting his 3’s but he found other ways to score. Plus he quietly has been playing some decent defense. He has quick hands and is looking like a pretty good team defender.

I do understand the modern game and the importance of 3 point shooting but our offense doesn’t prioritize 3 point shooting. I think we should play our best defenders. I would much rather having a guy like Stanley playing tough defense then a shooter like Ellington who only got off three 3’s and was ripped apart on defense.

What Is the record for missed layups?

    • Russ had the old record and broke that last night with 11 misses. Very disappointing game from Russ. I said on the podcast last night that this game may have been the turning point for me. I love Russ and his motor and, like LeBron said, he did so many great things last night that helped us come back but we wouldn’t have been down by 20 going into the fourth if he had played better and been more careful with the ball and his shots.

Last night may have been the final straw for me. While I think there is a path to the championship that includes Russ, I don’t think it’s the Lakers’ best opportunity to win this season and I expect Rob Pelinka to make a big move that includes Russ. I juste don’t think the chaos and craziness that his game brings to a team is what the Lakers need to win a championship this year.

So count me in those who do believe trading for Russ was a mistake and the Lakers should do whatever they have to take advantage of opportunities to trade Russ along with THT and Nunn to transform the Lakers back into the big bully ball team that can dominate opponents playing big or small. Right now, we’re a team that can’t win either way.

My biggest takeaway from this game, was the energy we played with. If we had played this hard all year we would have a much better record. I also thought the ball moved better then it has for awhile.

Still the same problems that we have had all year continued.

20 turnovers led to 29 points. And the frustrating part was many of the turnovers we unforced. Plus there were too many thread the needle fails. They look great when they work but they seldom do.

16 offensive rebounds again killed us. Just way too many 2nd chance points.

Why did we sign Wayne if he is going to get 5 shots in 36 minutes. They didn’t make much of an effort to find him. Shooters need to shoot. This short handed he should have gotten twice as many. LeBron and Russ went 1 for 9 from 3, while the rest of the team shot 44%. This has to change.

    8 missed free throws. Again.

Russ had 20 8 and 8. Normally that looks okay but 6 turnovers and as usual a few misses at the rim. The killer was that last miss at the rim with only 56 seconds left.

I think Alex would have looked very good in our starting line up.

Trevor only got 15 minutes but he looked like he was moving pretty well. His timing was understandably off but it’s really good to have him back.

IT did a pretty good job. He is earning a contract somewhere.

It was the energy that was encouraging for me. We really need to play this hard all the time.

    At least we played hard

    • Aloha, Michael.

As it’s impossible not to see, this season is looking more and more like last season. While we haven’t been knocked out, we’ve been banged up and beaten up and the injury to AD will now force us survive the next 22 games (average games missed for partial MCL tear) but coalesce as a championship team with a healthy big three over the last 30 games of the season. Of course, that assumes LeBron won’t injure himself trying to keep us above water in the meantime. Yes, we have a chance but at this point it’s only a puncher’s chance. And only because of Covid.

It was a chaotic game with lineups you never thought you would see and sporadic stretches of great and terrible play. It’s what we’re going to see a lot of unless Omicron isn’t as contagious as the experts think and Covid somehow becomes a non-factor. Otherwise, having AD take off the next 22 games could be the silver lining that saves this season, as long as LeBron and Russ stay healthy and don’t have to burn themselves out.

While Russ has been playing well, the Lakers know they need major upgrades to their starting lineup and rotations if they want to win the championship. And trading Russ is their only chance to get enough back in return to be better off. Russ, THT, Nunn, and their 2027 first round pick are their trading chips. They need to go after Myles Turner, Ben Simmons, Jaylen Brown, Jerami Grant, or Christian Wood. Size and defense upgrades. The real silver lining is every game we lose only reinforces how why we need to make a move. Pelinka needs to pull off a blockbuster. And we can’t wait until summer.

    • Lots of good feelings for former Lakers last night. Was good to see Rondo and Alex smiling at that jump ball. Glad Alex had a good game since he was scoreless in his first game against us. And good to see Alfonzo get a chance to play. Also loved IT playing well again.

Not bad under the circumstances. Still the Bulls are 16 to 0 on points off turnovers and 11 to 2 on free throws made. Trevor has been good in limited minutes. And IT still looking good. Let’s see if we can cut down on the turnovers in the 2nd half.

Tonight join us on Twitter for a rousing game of “is this the name of a Magic replacement player, the name of a Nets replacement player, the name of a sandwich or the name of a red-nosed reindeer.”

All joking aside, I wonder how long the league can allow this to go on.

    Aloha,

Russ and Bradley are not out due to Covid. Brown our 2 way will probably see some run and IT if the league approves the emergency 10 contract in time. Just when we were beginning to show improvement. Not sure if Trevor can play. They were aiming for next week but they sure can use him now. This has truly been a snake bit year.

    • Anybody who thought this season was going to be the first real post-Covid season has seen their dreams go up in flames.

The unvaccinated have exposed the entire country to another year of Covid with their refusal to get vaccinated, wear masks, or listen to the public health experts and doctors. Unfortunately for many of them, they’re foolishly risking their own lives and others’ for no good reason. And as a result, risking our NBA season.

The NBA is facing a tough decision. Go the hard road and suspend play and setup a bubble, which the players have no more patience for, or allow vaccinated players to play as long as non-symptomatic and not sick. In other words, trust the vaccines to do their jobs and prevent hospitalization or death. Tough decision in today’s polarized public health environment.

More importantly, howeverm, we’re for sure going to have a third straight NBA season who’s eventual winning is going to partly determined by who gets Covid, how bad it is, and when it happens. We’re seeing just the tip of the potential iceberg with five Lakers in Health and Safety Protocols. And just a handful of the 30 NBA teams. Does anybody think we’re going to be able to keep this from getting worse? Although not as severe or lethal, omicron is way more contagious and is going to spread much faster than the other variants.

We had the bubble year, then the makeup year, and now the omicrom year. Three years like none ever in NBA history. Let’s hope the Lakers can win two of those three championships.

    Aloha,

There are 3 things you can count on, death, taxes and the Lakers being mentioned as a trade destination for players on the trade block. It happens every year and doesn’t happen, AD being the exception.

Now I have learned to never say never because I have seen some craziness. Pau coming to the Lakers comes to mind. The Rockets rejecting an offer that included Simmons because they didn’t want to deal with Morey is another example. Still it rarely happens.

The 76ers say they are not interested in Russ. And I believe them. Could the 76ers get desperate.? I suppose but I’m not counting on it. He wouldn’t be the best fit. They might have to take a little less, but would still be better.

Now I view the trade machine as a false prophet that leads fans on and makes any trade work. But no one bothers to investigate why the other team would do the trade. Of the big names available the trading team can do better then what the Lakers have to offer.

Personally I am looking for small trades that could help us and the other team as well. For instance, Cam Reddish appears to be on the market. He is a young forward with size and upside that would help our small front line. The Hawks need a quality back up for Tre. Nunn for Reddish would be a win for both teams. Those are the kind deals that could happen. The big names? Not so much. We don’t have the assets.

    • I take a completely different view of the trade season than you do, Michael. For me, trades are a unique opportunities to upgrade the team. Free agency used to be the key but today it’s trades. It’s how the Lakers were able to leverage LeBron to force a trade for Anthony Davis. I believe what we’re seeing right now with Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons is Klutch’s next move.

While you’re more likely to be right that we end up only doing small deals, I do think there are reasons to be optimistic that the Lakers view this season as a critical season that cannot be wasted. While Rob has not made an in-season trade since he took over from Magic, this year may be the exception. Losing last season to injuries and seeing the slow start to this season has made the Lakers panic and looking for a makeover of some kind.

I base that primarily on the fact that the Lakers are willing to explore trading Russell Westbrook. Risking the team chemistry by looking for trades for Russ is a sure sign the Lakers are serious about blowing up the team that LeBron and AD created with that dinner with Russ at LeBron’s home. They may not be successful but I give Rob credit for having the cajones to to think big. Lakers cannot waste a year of LeBron James destiny by going small.

Well at least I didn’t have to say loss. This years version of the Lakers are by far the most frustrating group that I can recall. It’s not that they lack the talent to be a top team, it’s just that they seem to only muster the energy to be great in spurts.

Last night the first half was disappointing. But it’s not unusual in the NBA for a bad team to hang around in the first half. It’s the 2nd half we’re separation usually occurs. And last night was no exception. We blew the doors off Staples in the 3rd quarter, with our best quarter of the season. We did exactly what we should have to a bad team. Then came the 4th. To say we took our foot off the gas would be an understatement. We shut the freaking car off. From LeBron down we decided we no longer had to put up any defensive resistance nor have to look for quality shots. We did finally crank the engine over but not until a 25 point lead had shrank to 10. This has become a pattern that will have to be abolished if we truly want another championship. Still there were some positives.

LeBron continues to prove that his problems were due to injuries, not age. He dominated the game until he shut down in the 4th.

For the most part Russ had another strong game. He maybe the most frustrating player on this frustrating team as he had several turnovers where he would attack into triple teams and turn the ball over. Still that was balanced by solid play.

THT has been climbing again on that young guy rollercoaster. He had a great offensive game with 19 points and 3 for 6 from 3. But it was defense that he shined with 6 steals. While his offense is inconsistent, defensively is where he seems to be improving every game. If he continues to be a plus on offense combined with the growth on defense, it will make for an interesting decision for Frank once Trevor is ready to go.

    Another disappointing win

    • Aloha, Michael,

I’ll take any win as good news right now. We needed to have a second win in a row and LeBron was great. Super to see THT bounce back. Nothing more important than LeBron looking fresh and bouncy.

We need to beat the Mavs, Wolves, and Bulls to go into the game against the Suns with an 18-13 record and 5-game winning streak. That’s a game where we need to make a statement.

Forgive me if I’m not excited by a blow out win over a team we should have blown out two other times. Nor do I look at this win as some kind of turning point. We have been down that road before. Still there were a few things to be encouraged by.

First, move the ball and the shots will fall. We had a season high 19 3’s and a lot of those were due to moving the ball. I fear that a lot of that had to due with AD not playing. It doesn’t matter if you have 3 superstars if we don’t get into the habit of moving the ball. All of this iso ball business will get us bounced in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs.

Avery Bradley had a fantastic game on both sides of the ball. Avery always has been a competent 3 point shooter. Last night raised he his percentage to 41%, but on just 3 triples a game. If we are going to start him then we need to find him for 3’s. I would much rather have him taking those shots than Russ or AD, actually LeBron as well.

A little bit at a time LeBron is beginning to look like LeBron again. He was very aggressive attacking the paint. That’s a very good sign. 4 for 6 from 3 was great, but LeBron is a lot like Kobe, a mediocre 3 point shooter that can occasionally get hot from distance. I just don’t want him falling in love with the 3.

Slowly but surely our defensive rating continues to trend upwards. Ironically it’s more our offense than our defense that is doing us in. SGA only had 11 points which is terrific D on a quality player like him. It seemed like the entire squad was locked in.

Austin Reeves had a very nice game. After coming back from injury he looked a little off his game and a bit hesitant. Understandable after missing a few weeks due to injury. Last night he looked like was fully back from that injury.

I’m not going to go into the negatives except for one. After stringing together a run of good games culminating in a great game against the Celtics he has seemed to regress again over the last 2. I mean he 2 of the ugliest turnovers I’ve seen this year. When you are missing a star you expect your other stars to step up. The only upside was he did defer more to a LeBron then normal and in turn LeBron was moving the ball and attacking.

In the end is a win but I’m not going to get too excited until we can string a few wins against good teams together.
