    Draft Capital

    Aloha,

The biggest problem facing the Lakers this summer is draft capital. We read about consolidation trades. We read about guys the Lakers are interested in trading for. The problem is lack of draft capital. We have 1 first and one distant 2nd to work with. Our 26 and 28 swaps available are pretty useless, especially for a rebuilding team that more than likely not be as good. The 2030 and beyond may have some value but it’s been costing multiple 2nds and in some cases 1st round picks to move contracts. And at this point in the summer not many teams have the cap space to even absorb much more salary under the cap. The Lakers have been playing it close to vest but I’m not sure if there is anyone out there that is available that we can realistically land that would be enough of an upgrade to matter. I expect Shake to be waived but then what?

    • I’d only waive Shake for a stretch big (Love…but homie’s old, however being a James pal may help and he’s a quality dude) or a solid G-Leaguer like Bazely. CP3 could work, as well.

      • One thing that has not been discussed is waiving and stretching a player. Kleber or Gabe would cost us 3.5 mil against the cap for the next 3 years. That isn’t a lot. That would free up 7.3 mil in cap space. If we cut Shake that gives around 11 mil under the 1st apron. That would give us 2 roster as well. We would be able to use our full bi annual and room for vet minimums as well. I wouldn’t do it unless you could land real difference makers. DeAnthony Melton comes to mind but he might not be available for the full bi annual, considering the Warriors still have their full non taxpayer available and appear interested. They used 12 mil last year to sign him. . I doubt much happens on the guard market happens until the Bradley Beal situation is resolved.

    • For me Ayton even with his flaws is better than any of the free agent targets tied to the Lakers. He’s a 20 mil center that we are paying 8 for. He’s was at his best when playing with great play makers like CP3. He didn’t have any in Portland. Now he has 3. It would be great if he blocked more shots. But at 250 pounds he clogs the paint and he isn’t easily moved. You don’t necessarily have to blocks if you are a physical deterrent at the rim and he does that. I think he will have a really good year because he understands that he has to.

    • Even with a half-ass effort, he was better than any other the other free agent targets.

    • I don’t recall who brought it up as it being a contract year but that’s always a source of motivation.

    • The problem was he wasn’t worth his 35 mil price tag. t this price point he is a steal.

      • I have liked what I have seen from Bazley. He has shown that he probably deserves another shot at the NBA. But like the commentators noted, he has 237 NBA games under his belt and should stand out. He is playing against a bunch of guys that for the most part will never set foot on an NBA court. There will be a little more competition in Vegas. It will be interesting how he looks there. The summer league is littered with guys that tore it up, never to be heard from again. We’ll see.
