People don’t realize that Luka Doncic has NEVER played alongside a player who’s elite defensively or has made an All-Defensive Team. Now he’s playing with one who has been ‘First Team’ 3x and a former defensive player of the year 👀 pic.twitter.com/X9YaEUWFOF— HeroOfTheDay (@Hero_OfThe_Day) July 19, 2025

The Science and Art of Building Championship Era Around Luka Building a championship era around Luka Doncic will take equal doses of science and art: science in assessing what works with Luka and where the league is headed and art in turning that data into a plan to optimize… pic.twitter.com/w5A7IluhuC— LakerTom (@LakerTom) July 19, 2025

Did you know that the Lakers are a +14.1 when Rui and Luka share the floor. And they are a whopping offensive rating of 124 together. besides shooting 41% from 3 Rui also averages 1.7 points on base line cuts. Rui is a solid defener. The kind of defender you want isnt available for what we have to offer and none of them bring the offensive impact Rui does. know your personel.
-
Next move will be a trade for Andrew Wiggins. Rui, Gabe, and Dalton will be included in that trade to clear room under first apron to sign Smart to BAE.

It’s the same as building around an aging LeBron who doesn’t play much D in the regular season. It’s how literally every team is constructing a roster which is why the same, very small pool of players are being sought out by every team. It’s why the smart GM’s lock up the players that compliment their superstars well……like Rui does ours…….rather than play fake GM musical chairs all summer long. It’s why quality role-players are nearly as untouchable as superstars.
-
The long rangy 3 and D guys have been a target for decades, this is nothing new. Just because some talking head at ESPN attached a catch phrase to it and called guys like Pascal Siakim a “3 and D” guy doesn’t mean players like Lamar Odom, Michael Cooper and their ilk haven’t been prime targets for teams in win now mode for a very, very long time.
-
Anyway, we got Smart which essentially is another reclamation project where we hope an aging player can capture a little of that magic from before 2020 which wouldn’t be so bad except you’re hell bent on trading 2/3 good, playable players for another broken one. At least we didn’t end up with Ben Simmons who will be out of the league in about 2 weeks.

There will be a lot more extensions and fewer guys reaching free agency. I think the trend will be one or two stars and investment in quality role players.

I don’t think the franchise needed saving. We already had Luka, we already have a four year plan, even if it was Rob who put it together. I think we’ll see the impact of this in the next few years when it comes to investments in the areas around the team. Feels like Mark is giving Jeannie, and thus Rob, a flourish year window to make this work. Come 2029/2030 I think we’ll see Mark start to leave a bigger mark on the team. For now I just want to see him stop profiting off of ICE and their detention centers in LA.

I have a feeling there was an internal discussion about going younger or getting a veteran. Up until the injury Bazely had made a compelling case for the last spot. Notsomuch now. Nobody else jumps off the summer league squad so it turns to which vet fits best. Also which vet can we afford who also won’t maybe mind too much if it’s just a one year deal please and thanks?

LAKERS OFFER RUI, GABE, & 2ND FOR WIGGINSI agree, Raj. DC also very high on Austin Reaves. Says having a big three of him with Luka & LeBron gives you a chance to win a ton of games. https://t.co/H6ttX58z39— Raj C. (@RajChipalu) July 19, 2025

Looking at the numbers when he was on Golden State, which is a better comparison as to what his role on the Lakers would be, Rui and he are basically putting up the same numbers. Rui costs a lot less and is the better offensive player. Wiggins is older and has the edge on defense…for now.
-
Once one starts to take into account that Wiggins played with a far superior back line in the paint, better perimeter defenders and a scheme that worked to all their combined strengths I start to question his overall individual impact. Not to say that he’s not a good defender but that defense is as much a reflection of the team’s overall cohesion and focus on that end as anything else.

Toss in that we’re trading 2 for 1 without a clear upgrade or even replacement and this all makes less sense. If we’re giving up a pick it’s a bad deal for us. We can’t be trading any picks for 30+ year old role players who have player options in years where we want fiduciary flexibility.

2:00 pm PT deadline or Milton ($3M) and Goodwin ($25K) will be guaranteed. I think Goodwin can still be waived if needed after tomorrow. Milton likely gone for sure but Goodwin still alive but will need consolidation trade. Not sure if it has to be by 2:00 pm because only $25K of Goodwin’s $2.3M w/b guaranteed then.
