Fun game and it was good for the Lakers to get a win against a team with a winning record (an elusive feat of late. Plenty to get into so let’s not dally. The WordPress editor is acting funky so it’s a short one one on the Blog.

    1) Rui Hachimura’s first-ever buzzer beater. For someone who seems content to lurk in the background, Rui Hachimura was placed front and center last night when he caught a pass from a driving LeBron James and smoothly canned a three pointer over the leaping arm of Brandon Ingram. It was his first buzzer beater and it helped the Lakers remain undefeated in the clutch, not lose back-to-back games and ended LeBron’s streak of scoring 10 points in a game.

    2) LeBron’s streak of scoring 10 points in a game ended. LeBron took it like one should: -12 fucks given. Look, it’s a cool streak and one that’s unlikely to be replicated any time soon…but it’s just not that important to me. I thought it was mildly silly when Redick put him back in during the blowout to Phoenix just to get it. This was a nice way for it to end.

    3) Reaves putting the team on his shoulders. The luxury of having Reaves and Luka reveals itself all the time. Having 2 guys that can orchestrate an offense for themselves and others at a a high level while efficiently scoring is an amazing thing to have on an NBA team. Reaves had another great game last night and he did it without really forcing his offense. He knew when he needed to score to keep it close, he didn’t just call his number every time down and we won because of that nuanced difference between he and a lot of players.

    4) Nick Smith Jr. The staff needs to figure out a way to get this guy some minutes. He could be the off the bench scorer this team desperately needs. His 12 points in 14 minutes on 7 shots (2-3 from three) were monumental last night. Love how the kid stays ready in the face of multiple DNP-CD.

    5) Development for the future. One of the reasons I was excited about Redick becoming the coach was his seeming focus on developing our younger players. Turns out it was mostly lip service being played as none of our younger players seem to get minutes anymore…until last night when we finally saw the return of Thiero (a whopping 10 minutes) and Smith Jr. (14 minutes) to the rotation. Not sure why we play Maxi Kleber at this point. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and he seems to have decent instincts but he’s gun shy, doesn’t rebound, and is a mediocre defender who is slow of foot. There’s not a team that wants or needs him out there, he’ll likely retire from the NBA and play in Germany next season. There’s no world where he’s a part of the Lakers future (and you can honestly say the same about Gabe Vincent and Marcus Smart but at least one of them can shoot…kinda and the other one can defend…when he’s healthy enough to play) so why not give his minutes to our first round pick and see what he can do? Same goes for Nick Smith Jr. who seems capable of lighting it up in a small allotment of minutes. In a league that is trending younger and faster, the Lakers and Redick seem stuck in the old way of giving the vets enough rope to hang themselves three times. I don’t count Vando as a young player, although he’s on the cusp, because I feel like he is what he is. In the right defensive system he’s an elite defender. In ours he’s just the first guy to get switched off so that ball handler can attack Reaves or LeBron. And while he’s shooting a better % from three than Marcus Smart, currently, it’s not his strong suit and he still isn’t finishing well. If he cleaned up either one of those areas I think his situation on this team would be different. If we didn’t play a very predictable brand of defense he would be more valuable. Until one of those things change, he’s not able to be the best version of what he is on this team.

    • Nice post Jaime, You are right about Nick. He is the only guy on the 2nd unit that can really go off offensively an create his own shot. As a two way player he gets 50 games. I am not sure how many he has actually played but at some point they need to add this guy to the roster. As for the other young guys, Bronny really has not shown a reason to play him other than garbage time. And we should start calling Dalton garbage time, because that seems to be the only time is making his shots. I like what I have seen from Adou. I watched him in the G league and he showed that he didn’t belong there, that he needed to be up with the big club. I have liked what I have seen so far. But like Lebron he missed all summer, training camp and a whole lot of games. So working him in slowly makes some sense. With Lebron doubtful for today, we may see him get more minutes.

      • Not sure Bronny has been given much non-garbage time to work with when compared to Knecht. Even in Dalton’s case feels like we’re just going to let another FRP pick walk after they’re rookie deal for nothing. Seems silly to me to not try and get these guys some on-court time. As you say, back-to-back and so maybe we see some young guys but this went back to last season and in thew playoffs, too.

I’m not saying it’s easy, and Vando’s situation shows how fit and style impact effectiveness, but I haven’t heard a case yet as to why Maxi Kleber should get minutes over any of those dudes. Hoping Nick gets converted to that last spot and that we don’t sign CP3 or some other over-the-hill player hoping for a ring. That time has to end in LA, it’s wasteful and only makes the future harder.

    • Dude took 17 shots and made 4. He had his chances. Sacrifice is a funny word when he had every opportunity to make it happen organically. Maybe should read “LeBron didn’t selfishly try and extend the streak in OT on the road” lol. Glad it’s over because now we can play him in a manner that helps him ramp up correctly and not force feed him shots to keep a silly streak going. He seemed to care about the streak as much as me, which is to say zero. The win was the thing we needed.

    • FROM ABOVE ARTICLE:

Down Luka Dončić and Marcus Smart, the Lakers won another close game, beating the Toronto Raptors 123–120 on a last-second Rui Hachimura game winner. It was their second victory at the buzzer after Austin Reaves sank one in Game 5 against the Timberwolves.

With another win in a close game, the Lakers remain the only unbeaten clutch team at 7–0. Even the juggernaut Thunder have dropped one and sit second at 9–1.

After a disappointing loss against the Suns, the Lakers bounced back again and still have not lost two consecutive games this season, picking up a huge road win against a surging Raptors team that ranks top ten on offense and top five on defense.

Two players I was critical of as a defensive hustle combo in my 20-game check, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton, made the two winning plays on the final possessions — Ayton getting a crucial stop on Brandon Ingram’s drive, and Hachimura sinking the game winner from the corner.

And lastly, LeBron James, like so many times before in his career, chose to make the right play over chasing his own shot that would have kept his 1,297-game streak with at least 10 points alive.

LeBron compensating struggles with IQ and playmaking

Increased hustle for just enough stops

More Adou Thiero minutes please (🎞️VIDEO)

      Bonus: a quick Celtics preview

1-A tightly connected, resilient group (🎞️VIDEO)

I am often critical of this team’s lack of cohesion on defense, but I think that’s mostly due to a lack of defensive talent and athleticism. What the Lakers keep showing us this season is that they are a resilient group that responds to disappointing losses with bounce-back performances and keeps winning even when missing several key players.

The play that led to the game winner was the perfect example: Reaves patiently waited to draw a late-clock double team, then gave up the ball to James in the middle, and James made the right play by swinging it to Hachimura in the corner. After going scoreless on one shot in the previous game, Hachimura calmly sank the game-winning three.

2-Austin Reaves keeps showing he is an All-NBA player (🎞️VIDEO)

With Dončić unavailable, Reaves showed once again that the Lakers have another creator who could easily be a primary option on almost any other team. Reaves had another astonishingly dominant game, scoring 44 points on 13-of-21 shooting, 5-of-11 from three, sinking 13 of his 15 free throws, and adding 10 assists. His 22-point third-quarter scoring explosion was reminiscent of the best Dončić or Kyrie Irving takeovers I’ve seen over the past couple of years.

The Lakers are 3–1 this season when Reaves is the main cog with Dončić sidelined, and Reaves is averaging 41 points in those games.

The Lakers might not only have the best scoring duo or the best backcourt in the NBA, they might have two legit All-NBA players at the moment, with Reaves joining Dončić in the top ten of most advanced metrics this season.

3-LeBron compensating struggles with IQ and playmaking

If Reaves’ ascendance to All-NBA level has been the most positive big-picture development for the Lakers this season, LeBron’s physical struggles have been the most concerning.

For a third game in a row, James looked to have no lift on his drives or his shots, struggling to finish at the rim. He shot 4-of-17 from the field last night, scoring only 8 points after scoring 10 and 13 in the previous two games. On top of that, many of his misses at the rim function like turnovers, as he often doesn’t get back in transition, giving opponents easy opportunities. The Raptors outscored the Lakers 21–11 on fast-break points. Postgame, James explained that he’s still trying to find his rhythm after missing training camp and the first 14 games of the season, but watching one of the greatest athletes of all time look like a mere mortal is rough at the moment.

However, even playing without the athletic edge for the first time in his career, James is still a superior decision-maker and passer. In addition to the final delivery to Hachimura, he made several other plays for his teammates and finished the night with 11 assists.

4-Increased hustle for just enough stops

This was far from an impressive defensive performance. The Lakers’ recipe for wins this season has been awesome offense and just enough hustle on the other end, and this was another exhibit of that. Led by Reaves’ shot-making and another super-efficient 8-of-11 night from Deandre Ayton, the Lakers scored at a rate of almost 134 points per 100 possessions, which should get them the win on most nights. In this one, it almost wasn’t enough, because despite the Lakers being the visibly better half-court offense (there was a 23-point-per-100-possessions gap in half-court efficiency), the Raptors made up for it with transition play and by outhustling the Lakers on the offensive glass.

      Source: Cleaning the Glass

Just enough hustle and defense is the other Lakers theme this season, and last night was an upgrade in that department compared to the Suns game. The Lakers had one of their better offensive rebounding games as well and finished with seven steals and seven blocks. Jake LaRavia earned extended minutes and justified them with one of his better hustle games, providing much better resistance against Brandon Ingram than Hachimura did. Both big men, Ayton and Hayes, blocked and contested enough shots, and Gabe Vincent had some good hustle moments too.

Overall, there were still too many breakdowns, especially defending away actions for Ingram and defensing the Raptors stretch bigs popping up for threes. Once again, the starter stints in both halves were uninspiring. But addressing those, as I wrote in my 20-game check, will require rotation or roster changes.

5-More Adou Thiero minutes please (🎞️VIDEO)

The Lakers’ lack of athleticism and speed is glaring and well documented, so anytime the biggest internal hope of filling that gap, rookie Adou Thiero, gets minutes, he draws special attention.

Last night, Thiero logged a career-high 10 minutes and showed flashes of why he should be getting more, as his potential development into a rotation player this season would be a big boost. He made an and-one on an up-and-under move, driving decisively against a close-out, then showed off his length and speed by getting his hands on a ball no other player on the roster probably could, and crashed the glass for an offensive rebound.

Thiero has gotten a couple of minutes in six of the last eight games. The next step is for Redick to trust and test him in a longer stint in one of the upcoming games. The risk versus potential reward is more than worth it for the Lakers.

      Bonus: a quick Celtics preview

Both teams will be on the second night of a back-to-back, and most of the key stars could be missing. Jayson Tatum and Luka Dončić will be out, while the status of Marcus Smart, LeBron James (he skipped the previous back-to-back game), and Jaylen Brown (illness) is still unclear, which makes a preview hard to do.

What is clear is that whoever plays for the Celtics, Joe Mazzulla will have his team playing hard, especially against their biggest rival. Despite Tatum’s injury and losing three key rotation players in Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis, the 13–9 Celtics are surprisingly competitive.

Brown is having an incredible season, averaging 29/6/5 as the head of the snake for the fourth-best ranked offense, while the rest of the scoring comes from their three-guard combo of Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Anfernee Simons. Ex-Celtic Smart would come in very handy trying to keep up with a fast-moving, trigger-happy Celtics team that still ranks in the top five in three-point frequency.

The Celtics are a slow-paced team (they rank last in pace in the NBA), but that might change in this game. Their guard- and three-point-heavy rotation, with only one true big man in Neemias Queta, might try to punish the Lakers’ weaknesses — defending the three-point line with their bigs and getting back in the open floor.

    – In our last 11 games, we’ve played 3 teams who currently have winning records. Got smoked by every single one of them. The month of December will tell us where we really stand among contenders…schedule gets alot tougher.

    – We only shot 15 free throws in that Suns game; Luka & Reaves average 21 per game just between the 2 of them. We rely waaaayyyy too much on the whistle. Not a good sign for the playoffs when we all know physical play is rewarded much more than during the regular season.

    – Lebron hasn’t looked right since he missed all those games back in March…where we pretty much played .500 ball the rest of the way and got booted from the playoffs in the 1st round. He was a true liability in that Suns game. Maybe he needs more rest? idk

    – OKC. Everybody else is just playing for 2nd place. They probably can’t keep up this pace or win 73 games, but they don’t need to. They’ve done all this and haven’t even had their full roster all season. Their schedule will also get tougher but this team just looks unstoppable. That playoff experience from last season was invaluable.

    – Trades. If we aren’t beating OKC (we ain’t) then I don’t want to see us going “all in” this season by picking up older dudes. Only trades I want to see are those that make us younger, faster, and more athletic.

    – Rui. His inconsistent aggression is a problem. Sometimes he starts a game and I’m saying “Damn…Rui’s in his bag tonight!”. Then he disappears. Other nights, you don’t even realize he’s on the floor. You’re not going to get a buncha plays run for you as the 4th or 5th scoring option; you’ve gotta take the bull by the horns and make the most of every opportunity. It’s almost as if the coaches & the players don’t have faith in him.

—– Bill Parcells used to say “You are who your record says you are.” But there’s also a saying that states “Winning is the world’s greatest deodorant.” I ain’t saying we stink, but I feel like our record is masking alotta issues that may bite us in the bootay come playoff time. Again, these next few weeks should give us a clearer picture—–

    • I would say that, to this point, the Lakers have taken care of business as expected. We’re not built to be an elite defensive team but to outscore teams. The problem is, as you pointed out and I’ve been harping on for the last couple weeks, is that a huge chunk of our points comes from the stripe. That ship won’t sail for very long, even in the regular season.

At some point we need to run plays for Rui and Ayton. Hachimura is a prisoner of his own deference, a huge reason I don’t think we’ll extend him and makes him harder to move except his $$$ expires this summer.

Our 2 best guys play the “he fouled me when I drifted into him!” game, that’s a problem and I wish they would just take the ball to the rim a lot harder rather than try and bait the D.

The bench is a bigger issue in the regular season, but it’s a big one. We saw how few guys Redick is comfortable playing in the playoffs so not too worried about Jax, Knecht, etc.

OKC has a decent FRP coming via the Clippers this summer. They’re a huge problem for the next decade and no single trade can or will address it. Better to see what shakes loose when a team or 3 inevitably blows it up this summer.

    • Great post, Mongo. Lakers definitely have their kryptonite.

Lakers are what they are. Their need for a trade to plug their major holes is going to become more apparent as we get deeper into the schedule. I agree 100% that we should not use our draft capital for anybody over 30, including Giannis.

I’m also starting to believe the key to having a chance to build a roster to compete with OKC is prioritizing free agency rather than trades. What depth we create last offseason was due to not having to give up players and picks in free agency.

Right now, we need to let LeBron and maybe Vincent and Kleber walk away for nothing to open up mega cap space. There aren’t any superstars but there are some elite role players, which is exactly what we need to surround Luka with to win.

    • That’s not even close to the haul they’ll get. Should read “Best Trade the Lakers Can Make In-Season” lol. They’re going to get better than that, should he ask out now, guaranteed.

According to ESPN (so dubious, at best) the Knicks were the team he’d go to this summer. Evidently that is no longer the case and you’d have to expect Milwaukee will do their utmost to get enough draft assets to hit the reset button now. That’s not our offer, which is admittedly the “kitchen sink” offer we could put out there.

Honestly, for the Lakers, it would be better for him to have waited until the summer when we’d have 3 more picks to add outright along with the kitchen sink. Could have balanced the contracts better by signing and trading Rui and Reaves.

      Top 5 in-season suitors:
      -Bulls
      -Heat
      -Clippers
      -Raptors
      -Pistons

      Top 5 summer suitors:
      -Bulls
      -Heat
      -Raptors
      -Pelicans
      -Celtics

All of those teams can trade more draft picks outright and also cobble together the $$$ to make it work.

    • Lot to agree with here, in the end I don’t see us being involved unless it’s as a 3rd team that hopefully routes a low end contract in exchange for any draft picks at all. That would be dope.
