Clearly a controversial trade but one that could benefit both teams. Assumes Victor will sign a 3-year max extension for $32M per year. Could also assume Dennis also signs extension.
Lakers get the best player in the trade but are gambling on Oladipo returning to pre-injury form. The prize is they could end up with three superstars, a starting lineup of Oladipo, THT, LeBron, AD, and Gasol and a deep and talented bench with Kuzma, Caruso, Trezz, PJ, and Morris.
For the Lakers, it’s a trade to get them the third superstar to complement LeBron and AD and a major upgrade defensively. Victor was 3rd team All-NBA and All-Defensive 1st team. Also opens up opportunity for Talen Horton-Tucker to start alongside Oladipo with Caruso and Tucker backing them up.
Tucker would be a fantastic addition to the Lakers with his ability to defend all five positions and his penchant for drilling corner threes. He could give the Lakers more toughness and roster versatility. He could also play small ball center at times for the Lakers and be a more effective stretch five than Gasol.
For the Rockets, they get a great shooting guard under contract and an elite point guard whom they might be able to re-sign. It’s an interesting trade that could be a win for both teams.
It ain’t broke…
I agree, John.
Always have to be looking to make it better if you want to stay on top. While this is a big trade, it could get us a third superstar without gutting the team’s depth of bench.
Oladipo won’t be worth the extension he would sign. He’ll be available in the offseason, he’ll want out of the hot mess that is Houston. If he shows he’s back to that All NBA defense kind of mojo I’m all for it. That jury is waaaay out.
If Rob feels the need, he’ll make a move without giving up anyone consequential.
The reason you trade for Oladipo now is he is only making $21.0M so it takes less to match salaries and you can then use Bird rights to extend him to a max deal. There is no way to sign him as a free agent or trade for him this offseason. If you want him, you have to trade for him now.
If you wait until offseason, you would have to sign and trade for him for $33M and compete against other bidders, Once you sign and trade for him on a max deal, you would be hard capped again and would not be able to build a roster. Bottom line, the only time you can get him is now.
