🚨BREAKING: Mikal Bridges has agreed to a 4-year, $150 million contract extension with the Knicks, per @ShamsCharania.Bridges will get a player option in 2029 😳 pic.twitter.com/Qmo39ZUZRe— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) July 31, 2025
This is why hoarding cap space is stupid. It is a new day in the NBA and teams are locking up their star players. This is why having decent players under contract to trade is more important than cap space now.
I agree 100%. What’s impossible is trying to put together great trading chips and max cap space. That’s an almost impossible task.
Right now, the Lakers have $40M in expiring contracts. If they do not trade some of these expiring contracts for guys who will still be here this summer, we would not have enough players under contract besides Luka and Austin to trade for a $60M superstar.
Right now, we have maybe $20M in contracts that will be tradable this summer. Unless we convert $40M of those expiring contracts into at least 2-year deals, we won’t have enough contracts to trade for a superstar. That means we must make a trade before the deadline.
And there’s no way to do this and continue to try and create max cap space for 2027. Lakers once again not in complete agreement as to what they should be doing.
Is it just getting used to higher numbers? Or does that seem like way too much? Elite players w/b making over $1M/game. In 25 years, Grok says that will be $3M/game. https://t.co/XFzMRy4U36
I don't know if I agree with that, Otis. They're both elite players for their roles who positively impact winning. I do see them as being fairly equal as players but Mikal's defense is a absolute difference-maker imo.
I’m not sure Reaves is worth that on the open market but it also wouldn’t surprise me to see the Lakers overpay early in the process to lock him up. Rob, despite all the “Master Class” BS proclaimed around here, generally seems out of his depth. He uses picks in deals for players we din’t krep. A lot. He bids against himself. A lot. Most egregious, he continues to build rosters without a cohesive identity. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and look at past rosters and tell me one common thread beyond “Hey we have 2 top tier superstars! Let the talent do their thing!”
I would not cry if Pelinka gets fired (but keep in mind that he was just signed to an extension and got an additional title of president of basketball operations and GM (but sometimes teams bite the expense and cut bait….)…Bob Myers???
Walters may be more willing to move pieces around…Team suffered for two years under Darwin Ham….I was all for NEVER hiring Ham-Bone in the first place…nor letting him linger because of his contract. He was devaluing the franchise with his lack of leadership. Phoenix, I believe, is one team that hasn’t been afraid to carry the contracts of the past (fired coaches)….I think the team will do okay during the season…but the big question will be…”how will they do in the playoffs???”…Team needs to have depth, all the way to every active player on each given night needs to be capable of contributing.

In short, I’m basically hoping Rob gets canned before summer. Master Class my ass…

Oh sure, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Mark make some moves early on if the ship isn’t sailing right.
