Here's why the Lakers are excited about De'Andre Ayton

    • Talent has never been a question. He a solid scorer. Perhaps a few less jumpers. And a beast on the boards. Rebounding killed us last year. Would like to see more then on block a game.

      • The other thing I like he is an athletic, strong 250 pounds and won’t be pushed around. There was so much talk of us trading for Claxton who weighs 215. I like Ayton better. At 26 he is in a position to have a long career with the Lakers if he gets his head straight.

LAKERS BELIEVE THEIR COACHING STAFF CAN GET THROUGH TO AYTON

    • FROM THE ABVOVE ARTICLE:

Team sources believe the Lakers have the right coaching staff to make that happen. In JJ Redick, they have a deadly serious head coach who also understands how to relate to players. Assistant Scott Brooks worked with Ayton in Portland two years ago, and Nate McMillan has either played or coached with or against virtually every personality type the NBA’s ever concocted. And if not, the Lakers have maintained their flexibility for next summer and beyond.

    • I think anyone is capable of learning, growing and finding a better/different approach.

      • Frankly, by retaining Hayes and with that some actual team chemistry, Ayton just needs to be himself. We can let them play in 25/15 w/8 minutes or so of small ball with Luka, LeBron or Kleber at the 5.

        • Have you wondered why Simmons is still available? He played in the first 5 playoff games. He played a total of 42 minutes. Scored 4 points and 6 assists over those 5 games. Lue didn’t trust him enough to even play him in the last 2 games. Something broke in this guy. He hasn’t been good since that 76ers playoff loss.

    • He’s always been my last expiring contract to trade for the same reason.

    • A career 35% three point shooter (with more seasons under 35% than over) and under-sized? Nothing to worry about!

      • He’s 6’ 10” 240. I don’t consider that undersized. And he’s been a decent defender. He’s been hurt a lot for the last years. But when healthy you’re not going to do much better as the 3rd center.

    • Glad to see it. JJ should have done a better job countering what the Wolves did to neutralize Jax during the playoffs. I am still hoping against hope that Horford will not retire but join us. We need a stretch center in our offensive repertoire.

      • I am curious about what he signed for. We now have 14 under contract and only had five million available. We can cut Shake for another 3 mil. I would still like to get DeAnthony Melton if he is recovered from his injury, he is an excellent perimeter defender and can hit the 3. A minimum contract for him would be 2.8 mil. I doubt we sign another center. People forget that Kleber has been a fairly decent back up center in his career who had an injury riddled last couple of years. We also have Tre and Koloko on two ways to fill in when needed.

    • Vastly prefer a younger option to signing Al, need to see if we can develop talent that’s not prohibitively expensive.

      • Jax was pretty awesome in the regular season and, like the coach, wilted in his first taste of playoff action. No shame but the real question is if it fuels some soul searching, some early morning workout sessions and tangible on-court improvements.

    • Doubt it. Also we got one headcase in Ayton, don’t need 2. This dude vastly overstated his overall impact.
