Good to see the guys finally string together some wins against teams they should beat. Winning 5 outta 6 is always a good thing and nothing to turn my nose up at. A win is a win and they produced some impressive analytics numbers for folks to get excited about. But those numbers always have to be put into context and last night vs a good MEM team (playing a back-to-back btw) showed the difference between playing a buncha sub-.500 teams and playing actual playoff contenders. I could be wrong but the last winning team we beat was the Heat with Jimmy B injured early in that one…that was literally 2 months ago. The schedule gets alot more serious between now & the All Star break in mid February and we’ll have a much more realistic view of where we stand than wins against HOU, POR, MIN (w/o KAT & D.Russell), SAC, & ATL.
-
It was a nice little run. Now comes the real deal. Frittered away the easy part might be the thing that makes this too hard for these guys. Also hard for me to see a different player or two resulting in a sea change but you never know. That certainly has happened with teams in the past where a guy moves into a better situation and rediscovers the joy de vivre.

I heard this so many times growing up. Another way of saying actions speak louder than words. We’ve heard a whole lotta words about AD’s “desire” to play a buncha minutes at center. But the ACTIONS of the past and the move of adding Dwight & DeAndre paint a different picture to me. I think everyone (AD, Frankie, Rob, Rich, LeBron) is on the same page and they want that big traditional 5 who can grind & catch those lobs which was the formula to winning the Covid Cup.
We all know the team is better with AD at center but that still doesn’t mean he wants to spend the majority of his minutes there. All you have to do is look at the Naomi Osaka situation to understand the mental aspect of this thing. Being the best at something doesn’t necessarily make you happy.
And honestly, what does it all matter? The regular season is just something to endure. Nobody cares if you win 73 games; just get to the playoffs healthy. As was shown in the Cup, it’s not hard for AD to move to the 5 on short notice. All this hand-wringing is unnecessary.
-
It’s ironic and expected that our opinions on AD playing the five would lead to us completely differing in our opinion of the move to replace Gasol with Jordan.
To you, Mongo, it’s evidence we’re going back to our 2020 championship formula with two big centers to limit the time AD played the five, meaning we’re going to repeat the JaVale/Dwight rotation with the DeAndre/Dwight rotation.
That would make sense had we not made a move to bring in a point guard who can’t shoot the three. You can’t create any spacing with only a single elite 3-point shooter in the lineup. That’s why AD said he would play more 5 when he and LeBron met with Russ.
The argument of starting Gasol had merits. It worked last year in the regular season and it did create more spacing than a low post center in the dunker position would. But Russ changes everything. AD MUST play the five now. Anybody can see that. The Lakers may play around trying to bully ball everybody but teams will pack the paint with glee and hope the Lakers miss, which they won’t as much this year. Problem is still you need a shooter with 3-point gravity with Westbrook at the 1.
-
Nah..I just don’t think it’s all that important during the regular season. We’re gonna win our fair share of games no matter where AD plays and no matter who the other 2 starters are. Let AD play where he’s comfortable and then ease into the move late in the season and into the playoffs. And it’s not just AD..I think Frankie is more comfortable coaching with those traditional roles and he’s shown he’s kinda rigid in how he does things.
-
-
One thing I do know for sure is Vogel has a serious jigsaw puzzle to deal with when it comes to sorting out his rotation this season. What I am also seeing in the makeup of this roaster is the meticulous plan and attention given to the marathon season by having insurance at the five. There is no way I would expect AD to play the five throughout the season even though it is our best option. There will also be certain matchups that will not work in his favor. So to prepare for those situations is where I count on our traditional centers. After all, we had success with that formula in the bubble. The only question I have is are we going to settle for three centers? That part hasn’t been clear yet. Hopefully, we will find out sooner rather than later.

I'm still getting asked about Dennis Schroder and a Lakers S&T. Yes, technically, they can do that in early August but why does Dennis help the Lakers out? Why doesn't he just go to a team with $ w/o a S&T? Maybe if he's squeezed out of the market, but let's talk then
— Eric Pincus (@EricPincus) July 30, 2021
How is it still on the table? Lakers sending the 2 pieces the Kings wanted to the Wizards. The Lakers can't really get to a Buddy salary w/o Dennis S&T and I just noted, Schroder has no reason at this time to help the Lakers and Kings don't need DS https://t.co/tkxOL3ldiT

Don’t see Bubby coming here. Kings likely dragged their feet and blew it..again. Frankly, for them, not the worst thing to hold onto Buddy.
-
The Kings got greedy Jamie, it looked like the deal was done and suddenly they wanted the 22nd pick also. Next thing you know the call from the Wizards comes in.

Dallas is progressing in its attempts to hire Igor Kokoskov as an assistant coach to Jason Kidd, league sources say.
Kokoskov, who coached Luka Doncic to a EuroBasket title in 2017, is head coach at Turkish power Fenerbahce and would have to be released from his Fener contract.

Talked about this awhile ago with alotta the foreign players not having the chance to build long relationships with American coaches early in their development…unlike guys here who start getting notice as early as 8th grade. Could be a good move by the Mavs to placate Luka a bit.

It appears the #Lakers will attempt to reunite with Lonzo Ball this summer.https://t.co/hByNfTBmnV pic.twitter.com/VEgCcpEVjK
— Lakers Nation (@LakersNation) July 13, 2021
This offseason should be an interesting one for the Los Angeles Lakers as after a disappointing first-round postseason exit, changes to the roster are expected to be made.
Two things that the Lakers will be looking for are shooting and playmaking in order to take some of the load off LeBron James. One player who fits both of those skillsets is someone who Lakers fans are very familiar with: New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball.
Ball is set to hit restricted free agency and despite coming off a career season, most reports have indicated that the Pelicans are not intent on keeping him. In 55 games last season, Ball averaged career-highs in points (14.6), shooting percentage (41.4) and 3-point percentage (37.8) to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
If the Pelicans don’t bring him back, the Lakers are expected to be among the teams with interest in Ball, per Marc Stein of the New York Times:
“Expect to eventually hear of them searching for potential pathways, however obstacle-strewn they would be, to reacquiring restricted free agent-to-be Lonzo Ball for that reason.”
While Ball coming back to his hometown team that drafted him No. 2 overall in 2017 would be a great story, the pathway to make it happen is very slim.
First off, the Pelicans would have to be willing to sign-and-trade Ball back to the Lakers, which is unlikely in itself given the past relationship between the two teams. The Lakers would then have to pay Ball a hefty salary that could reach $20 million annually as well as send assets back to New Orleans.
Even if that agreement between the two teams and Ball was made though, the Lakers would then be hard-capped for the rest of the season. That means they would likely lose some of their other key free agents like Alex Caruso and Talen Horton-Tucker, who Rob Pelinka has made it clear he wants to bring back.
Additionally, Ball is expected to have no shortage of suitors this summer with the Chicago Bulls and L.A. Clippers already known to be among them. So the Lakers would also have to beat offers from other teams in sign-and-trade scenarios.
Pelinka has been known to take big risks since taking over the Lakers’ front office, so even though a reunion with Ball seems to be unlikely, it can’t be completely ruled out given L.A.’s need to add shooting and playmaking.

I’ve always been a big fan of Lonzo and love how he’s fixed some of the major flaws in his game, namely free-throw and 3-point shooting. I think Lonzo is a great option as a third star on the Lakers. His playmaking, shooting, and defense would be big pluses.
14.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 5.7 apg in 31.8 mpg. 3.1 3PM per 8.3 3PA for 37.8%
I lalso ove his outlet passing and the fact that he does not need the ball in his hands to have an impact. Great low usage option, which is good for LeBron and AD.
The problem is Lonzo is down near the bottom of the list of Lakers moves because it would hard cap us. If we can’t land any of the options that don’t hard cap us, then I think options like Lowry and Ball may be viable options.
I love Lonzo and would love him back on the Lakers but don’t see it happening. Hopefully, we won’t need to get that low on our big board that we have to hard cap ourselves.
-
-
I wouldn’t mind having Lonzo as our starting shooting guard and secondary ball handler. He’s great in transition. But I wouldn’t want him as the starting pg. he still has difficulty running the half court offense. He also shoots a dismal 37.9 on drives to the paint. Still not a good finisher. The Pels moved him to SG and he thrived in that role. And his ability to guard the 2 and 3 make him a defensive asset as well.
-
Thanks, Michael. I agree except for the hard cap issue. I’ve wanted Lonzo back ever since he fixed his jumper and free throw problems. Whomever is the shooting coach for the Pelicans has done a great job. Lakers might look to see if he were available to fill one of their vacancies.

I especially liked this comment although I’m not quite sure of the logic behind the comment:
“Word is that the Lakers, on top of their well-chronicled need for more shooting, covet one more difference-making playmaker who would allow James and Davis to spend more time at power forward and center.”
I can see Lonzo affecting LeBron playing the 4 more instead of the 1 but don’t quite grasp the logic that Lonzo would help AD play more five, unless it’s the presence of LeBron at the 5 that helps that. At any rate, we need more James at the 4 and AD at the 5.

These are the areas where the Lakers need to be flexing their major market, massive TV contract, outside the cap, Big D!ck Energy muscles on the rest of the league. No expense should be spared even to the point of excess & opulence.

Is it me or is PHX going to the finals? Seems like they’ve been the most consistent team this post season. The effort is always there..

All valid points, Mongo. We’re at the halfway mark of the season and our 7th place position pretty much sums up how we’ve played to this point despite having a favorable schedule. We are what we are: a 42-40 play-in team based on what we’ve seen.
Can that change? Sure, especially when we get Anthony Davis and Kendrick Nunn back or if we make a big trade for Myles Turner or Jerami Grant or anything to balance the roster and give us some more size for our small ball lineups.
What’s troublesome is we haven’t beaten any of the teams we are likely to face in the playoffs in the West: the Grizzlies, Suns, and Warriors. So nobody can say right now that our resume shows we can be more than what we are. There are promising sings but they’re offset by troubling signs.
Personally, I’m not going to let last night’s game bother me. Sometimes, you just can’t hit shots and the Grizzlies are clearly a legitimate top four team in the West with no question. Simply put, we’re going to have to (1) make a deal to get more size and defense and (2) play a whole lot better the second half of the season and peak heading into the playoffs.
