I was thinking about that. I think these buyout guys think about their next contract. Unless they are an aging vet chasing one last shot at a ring, they want to go to team that have the best chance at showcasing their talent. So the Lakers may have reached out to some of these guys. Although after the Lakers signed Kennard, a guy like Tomas would not have played. I do watch some G league and I believe the reason they went with Kobe is he does play a little defense. Nick is just a scorer and now that Maxi seems to be fully healthy Timme probably would not have seen the floor as the 4th center. Kobe has looked so good that they probably were afraid another team might scoop him up since he’s not on a 2 way contract. Obviously they like their 3 2 ways or they could have cut one and gave it to Kobe.
The reason that reported 50 mil cap space projection is out there is because you can’t go over the projected 166 salary cap with other teams free agents, with the exception of using the MLE. The only way to go over that 166 figure is by signing our own free agents. So we could bring in 50 mil in free agents plus we could use the MLE and then re-sign our own free agents to use the remaining dollar under the apron.
We will only have around 50 mil or so to sign other teams free agents with because of the 166 mile salary cap and the way cap holds work. Austin’s hold will be 150 % of his current salary or around 22 mil. Ayton and Smart’s cap holds will be 190 % of their current salaries. The way you use the remaining cap space under the apron is by signing your own free agents after you have signed the free agents from other teams.
We won’t have 75 mil to spend on free agents. Austin’s cap hold will be 150% of of his current salary, around 22 mil. Ayton and Smarts cap holds will be 190% of their salaries. Plus we can’t go over the salary cap projected at 166 million signing free agents other than our own who we would sign after the free agent. I’ve read we have somewhere between 50 and 55 million available in cap space for free agents that aren’t our own.
This is something I have been thinking about. OKC has 3 first round picks and a 2nd this summer. But they currently have 14 players under contract for 2026-27. They will need to make a move. With their big 3 all making major money, it is hard to see them, trading for another star. Would love to get a hold of their current 19th pick and the 2nd. They will not give up the lottery pick.
