Aloha,
I have read so many articles on the Lakers inaction that I have drawn the conclusion that all of these writers do not understand that the league has changed and it will probably never be the same again. The 3 things that changed everything are:
1. The new CBA with all of its punitive penalties for exceeding the various caps. And rules that make trades more difficult.
2. The play in game. This has given many teams hope of cracking the playoffs making them more reluctant to trade good players. While it’s championship or bust for the Lakers, making the play in game would be a huge win for many franchises.
3. The new lottery odds that discourages teams from tanking.
I guess I am less disappointed than many Laker fans because my expectations were so low going into the off season. This was a relatively weak free agent class but the bigger issue is the lack of sellers and the abundance of buyers.
It’s Econ 101. Supply and demand. Is Walter Kessler worth 2 first round picks? Please. Jamari Grant is a name linked to the Lakers. The Trailblazers want 2 firsts for him. He’s a good player but he’s not worth 2 firsts and a couple of good players.
I’m sure the Lakers are doing a cost analysis, I know I am and I don’t see any of the names mentioned that move the needle enough to justify the cost. Perhaps a big center like Wendell Carter would be worth a first because he is only making 11 mil but a lot of other teams think so too.
I think the Lakers are smart waiting. There will be a new system. I believe Austin, Rui, Vando and Max all have room to grow. Of course Darvins miss management of the roster hurt. When Rui became a starter, the Lakers went 21-10 with the toughest schedule in the league over that period. This is a good team. I think it makes sense to see who they are with better health, especially Vando and Vincent. We didn’t get a chance to see that last year.
For me the biggest win of the summer is that we haven’t done anything stupid yet. But Rob is the GM so I do worry. The worst thing the Lakers can do is overpay for a move that doesn’t really elevate the team. A trade just to make a trade would be stupid. .

Aloha,
I have no idea what is going on. Like I said, I had very low expectations going into the summer but this is ridiculous. Now Robb probably didn’t think that all 3 of the minimum contracts he handed out last year would opt in. But they all for various reasons did. Now are hands are tied. We have a 15 man roster and are into the 2nd apron. I have no idea what Rob is thinking. The Spurs just sent a player to the Hornets with a 2nd round pick. The Hornets will waive him. Robb needs to do something similar. Any of our minimum contract would do the trick. Until we get below that 2nd apron, our hands are tied. We can’t combine contracts in a trade for an upgrade. We can’t bring back even a penny more in a one for one trade. We can’t sign any of the potentially helpful free agents still on the market. I just don’t get it.

One thing I do want to make clear. I do agree with the Lakers reluctance to give up one or both of their remaining 1st round picks. None of the realistic trade options are game changers. The Trailblazers want two first rounders for Grant. I would not give up even one. He maybe an upgrade over Rui, it isn’t big enough to warrant two first rounders and the contracts it would take to land him. Same goes for Cam Johnson and Finney-smith with the Nets. The Nets want a first for either. They both could help make us better. It’s rumored they would take DLO. But now you have a hole at PG, without a viable replacement, so we could actually be worse. What I want to see is moves around the margins. Save the assets for a true game changer or the inevitable rebuild that is coming.

Aloha,
So, the Mav’s trade Hardaway jr into the Pistons cap space. It creates a trade exception that allows them to trade for Klay. This creates a trade exception for the Warriors and they sign Buddy into it.
And our Lakers can’t even find a trade for a minimum expiring contract that we pay to land into some teams cap space. We have a team option for next year on Maxwell Lewis so even he’s an expiring deal.
A trade puts us under the 2nd apron and allows us to make some moves. Don’t you think Rob that you should do that while there are some useful players still available?

Aloha,
I am having a hard time figuring out what the Lakers are doing. I’m not at all upset that we didn’t get Klay. We didn’t have a chance anyway. The Warriors didn’t want to take back salary in a trade and Dallas had a trade exception. I’m also hoping that the Derozan nonsense has passed.
I’m not upset that we haven’t found a big trade. There isn’t many names that seem to be on the trade block. So naturally the sellers are asking a lot for them. I try and look at net gain in a trade. Does what we give up make us significantly better for what we gain. With the names out there I feel the answer is no.
No what is frustrating me, is we haven’t freed up a roster spot yet. The rumor is that LeBron would help keep us under that 2nd apron but currently we haven’t created the space. It’s not that hard. Pay a team with cap space to take a guy. Send Lewis into the Hornets cap space along with a 2nd rounder.
The inventory of free agents that can help is drying up. We needed center help and most of the best low cost centers are gone. Every year there are a couple of quality guys that have to sign for less but the longer the Lakers wait, the less likely it is that we will be able to land one.

Aloha,
While the inventory is thinning out, there are still several guys that can be had for the mini middle level that could help the team. I have no clue what Rob is doing but he should at least be looking to free up a roster spot or two.
Assuming LeBron’s offer to take a pay cut was real, I hope him signing that new contract marks the end of the foolish Derozen pursuit. Just read that the Heat may get him. Come on Miami!!!!
I am not sure how the Lakers planned to replace Dlo if traded, considering that at the moment there doesn’t appear to be any available point guards. Unlikely as it is, but let’s say they have a plan. The Nets have said they are willing to take back DLO. I would explore Cam Johnson. That would give us a versatile group of forwards. Cam can play 2 through 4, although he has problems with defending big power forwards. Rui can play 3 through small ball 5. Vando can defend every position. Wood can play 4 or 5 and of course LeBron.
It would likely cost at least one of our first round picks and some seconds. And of course all the contracts we would send are expiring deals which would help the Nets and us. This is probably not enough but I know they have talked. Considering they just received a boat load of 1st rounders, our firsts may have more value to them than most rebuilding teams.

Aloha,
Tell me if you have seen this movie before. The Lakers go fishing after the big fish, while smaller fish that could have been useful are snapped up. The Lakers are ultimately unsuccessful and are left with nothing but minnows to choose from.

Aloha,
I came into this off season with very low expectations. We had no cap space beyond the mini MLE, only 2 distant 1st round picks, only one sizable expiring contract and no young prospects that would interest a rebuilding team.
To make matters worse, it is a weak free agent class. When Klay and Derozan are your big targets. That’s tells you how weak it is. And to top it off there have only been a handful of names on the trade block. The silver lining is we did get a very good prospect in a weak draft.
I guess the good news is, so far we haven’t done anything stupid. Unfortunately Rob has plenty of time left to pull off another boner move.
I had hoped to add a back up center that can bang and perhaps a decent minimum guy of MLE guy that can help. But since every one of our minimum guys opted in, we don’t even have a roster spot available. And as I look at the few rumored players that maybe available in a trade, I don’t see one that would be a big enough upgrade to justify the cost.
Look, this is a pretty good team. Health was a big issue. We generally had at least 3 rotation guys out, sometimes 4 and occasionally 5. And we had a coach that didn’t know how to handle it. Once he finally started the unit he should have all year long, we turned it around and was one of the best teams down the stretch. Even in the playoffs we faced a healthy Nuggets team with 3 guys out. While they weren’t stars, the games were so close that even minor contributions could have turned the tide.
So what do we do? Well, I think we see if we can open up a couple of roster spots and a player or two on the margins. Then hold onto our most tradable assets and see what presents itself as the season progresses. While are not a true contender I think we are a top 6 team. We are already better than the Nuggets and Clippers after they lost important players. We should save our assets for players that could make a difference.
My biggest fear is that Rob will again blow it and do something stupid. I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen

Aloha,
Just heard that the Lakers were set to give Klay a 4 year 20 mil per deal but the Warriors would not do a sign and trade with DLO. Thank you Warriors.
Dr Buss liked stars, so Jeanie likes stars. But there is a difference between having a star resume and still being a star. If we are going to trade DLO we can do better than Klay. He isn’t that guy anymore.
-
Klay kinda made sense if he was coming here for the full MLE, but even that stretched the logic of what we actually need right now which is to get younger and better. This will likely not happen overnight, thus it’s not a fan-friendly timeline.
Trading for Klay never made sense to me. You’re just improving the Warriors at that point. Same goes for DeRozan which means he’s basically off the board, too.

Aloha,
Well looks like Klay is going to the Mavs at 16 mil per for 3 years. The Mav’s had a trade exception to fit him into. Honestly, my heart isn’t broken. While he would have added value as a MLE signing, I wouldn’t waste trade assets on him. Good on Rob.
I actually don’t think Rob is doing anything wrong this summer. It’s just that we are in this mess for all the huge mistakes he has made in the past.
I’m to the point where I don’t know if I would spend our remaining trade assets on a marginal upgrade. It looks like Mitchell will resign with the Cav’s he is the kind of player you spend those picks on. He is a bonafide superstar. Say you trade for Jamari Grant from Portland. Yes he would be an upgrade over Rui but not a game changer.
If LeBron were smart he would take that pay cut and allow us to sign a couple decent role players with the MLE. An over the hill former star isn’t going to move the needle enough.
At this point, I wouldn’t mind standing pat with our core and hope guys like Austin and Rui continue to grow, maybe find a signing or two on the margins and save those picks for either a big fish or that rebuild that’s coming sooner than we would like.

Aloha,
Well day one is over, and for the Lakers, as David Byrne of the Talking Heads would say “Same as it always was”
Seems like Rob thought the office was closed because it was Sunday. But honestly, I didn’t expect us to do much in free agency because we simply didn’t have the cap space. LeBron caused a stir but that was a complicated longshot at best. Time to start looking at trading partners but more than likely we only make lateral moves and end up kicking the can to the trade deadline.
So yet another year of Rob not getting the job done in summertime and hoping for a miracle in the spring.
Like the man said….same as it ever was.

Aloha,
so Lebron would be willing to take a pay cut for Klay Thompson. At the full MLE, Klay is probably worth it, if he can still defend at a reasonable level. But is he really the answer? We have good 3 point shooting and under JJ they will get more looks from 3. lebron is one of the grearest ever to play but as a GM he has been terrible. There is a long list of failed aquistions that Lebron pushed for. anyone remember Westbrook? if he were smart he would realize that splitting the MLE amomg a couple of solid role players would be more benieficial than signing one aging former star. i wont be mad if it happens, I just think we could do better than adding Klay.
-
It’s not like James Harden, Klay Thompson, and Jonas Valanciunas are the right list. Frankly, it’s who we’re likely to get in trade of the picks that will be more important. LeBron has flipped the pressure totally on Pelinka though and that’s good because Rob needs to be pushed to go all in. Now he has little choice. Make the right smart moves that will fill the holes not just names.
-
Just putting on my conspiracy hat for a second. I think Jeannie & Rob had a chance to wrestle a lil bit of power & control back from Lebron with the Hurley hire. That was clearly a move geared toward the future with Lebron having no influence on the decision. When it fell through, it gave even MORE power to Lebron. Now he’s got his son here (not sure Hurley woulda signed off on that), his coach/puppet JayJay, and now he’s dangling this paycut thing to control free agency. Come at the King you best not miss……(Omar Little).

Aloha,
I was looking at our roster. If Cam and Hayes opt in, that gives us 12 players under contract. I believe the Lakers will bring back Max. He showed some upside and is definitely better than anyone we will land at 55. That’s 13. Unless we use that pick to move up into the early 2nd round for a back up big, should we even use that pick? Everyone is talking about us taking Bronny but he’s a project that will spend most of the year in the G league. If we draft him we are now at 14 players. With one spot left. Now I’m not sure how the new CBA works but there is a rule that prevents you from bundling minimum contracts. Not sure if it applies to the first apron or the 2nd. While the Lakers are looking to make trades, it’s no better than 50/50 they find one. Using 55 on a project doesn’t seem like a smart move.
-
You make a great points, Michael.
The aggregating players is not allowed if you are over the second tax apron. Since we will not do that, we will be able to move some of the jetsam we need to get rid of to open up roster spots.
I also think it’s not a smart move to draft Bronny as he will be better off charting his own course in the league rather than being tied to his dad. I’m hoping some team drafts him before the Lakers have a chance. That would be the best situation.

Aloha,
If this was a surprise pick for you, it should be. He wasn’t mentioned with the Lakers because nobody anticipated him falling this far. I googled mock draft and scrolled down. 5 mocks had him at 6. One at 8 and one at 10. The panel on draft show were stunned that he hadn’t been picked. Primarily because he’s older but for the Lakers that’s perfect. He was one of the best shooters in the draft and he is a 3 level scorer. And more importantly he is a motion scorer. He can shoot coming off screens. They showed the Lakers war room and they were ecstatic. And they should be. JJ is going to have fun with this guy. .

Aloha,
Seeing OG opting out brought back another wonderful Rob memory. Rob backed out of a 3 way trade with the Knicks and Raptors because he didn’t want to send Horton-Tucker to the Raptors. Later Horton-Tucker was his reason for letting Caruso walk because he claimed we couldn’t keep both. Fake news alert: He could have. Adding those moves to his long list makes it extremely difficult for me to have any faith that he can turn the Lakers around. Poor JJ, hardly knew ya.
