Aloha,
First the Hornets beat the Mav’s back to back. Now today they knock off the Thunder. And the Hornets didn’t play any of their vets.
Watched most of this one and it smelled alot like that game we lost to Houston. Rested SGA on the front end of a back to back probably thinking this would be an easy win. Then ended up missing 2 huge clutch free throws in crunch time. Can’t assume anything right now..Bad loss for them.
Meanwhile, either the Pels or Dubs will meet us at 38 losses tonight. KD back for PHX tomorrow vs the Wolves could put them down with us at 38 losses too.

Aloha,
I checked the score of the Pacers, Mavs game and found the Mav’s up by 20. Haliburton, Turner and Buddy are not playing. While the play in has kept teams from tanking early, who they play, once a team surrenders has big implications on the teams still in the running. The Trailblazers has shut down Dame and I doubt we will see Grant back now either. Teams are now jockeying for ping pong balls. This will also be true for the good teams that have a spot locked up. It could help us win games. If the Jazz are out of it when they play us, who will suit up for them? Will we see KD, Booker and Paul if the Suns have nothing to play for. The flip side of that is teams we need to lose might not face the best players on certain teams they play either. It puts even more emphasis on winning because the teams we are competing with may not lose as well.
-
I was just now looking at the injury reports. Blazers have also shut down Anfernee Simons and Nurkic. That squad is making vacation plans so they probably won’t beat a contender the rest of the way. Towns is out for the T-wolves tonight on a back-to-back so they probably get smoked by the Kings…which helps us. I think the Suns will play everyone just because they don’t have many games under their belts with KD. I’m not sure if Utah will tank; they brought Markkanen back tonight but their schedule is super tough. They’ve had a good season and Ainge might let them ride it out; tanking leaves a stench that’s hard to get rid of and I’m not sure their lottery odds would get a whole lot better…. Lakers just need to worry about what’s in front of them and what they can actually control. 4-3 might get us in but 5-2 would be alot better.

LeBron has been upgraded to doubtful for the Bulls game. That’s actually good news. It means he is closer. Could he be back for the TWolves? If not I wouldn’t play him against the Rockets. I would save him for the last 4.
-
There’s a lengthy break between Chicago games and that could include some kind of contact/scrimmage which I assume would be the last test. Then again they could be letting him control the green light.

Aloha,
AD had a monster game. 37 and 15 but in the post game interviews, to a man everyone acknowledged that they would have lost without Lonnie. OKC is a good young team, they had won 8 of 10 until they lost to the Clippers. When I found out that DLO was out, I was very concerned. But Lonnie came to the rescue.
He was our 3rd leading scorer until a series of injuries derailed him and he had not been the same after the last one, and he kept falling further down the rotation until he was out. If he can regain his form that would be huge for this team, especially since Beasley has struggled with his shot. Lonnie is a 3 level scorer and more dynamic than Beasley when he is on his game.
Then there is Dennis. On a night Austin struggled to score Dennis put up 21 points and demonstrated his never ending hustle to the point of exhaustion when he laid on the floor and had to be taken out to for a blow. We have to figure out a way to keep Dennis. I hope he will play for the mini MLE of 7 mil. If not I would cut Beasley and Bamba in order to sign some of our role players and give Dennis the equivalent of the full MLE 11 mil that is probably his market right now.
Several other guys also chipped in. Austin’s shot was off but he had 9 assists. And Vandy played great defense again. One point but 10 boards. He was the primary defender on Shai. Shai scored 27 but on 22 shots. Considering he averages over 30, I’ll take that every day.
This Laker team is actually deeper than our championship bubble team. And that depth is paying off. We are 8 and 5 since LeBron went down and we were without DLO for some of those games as well. And one loss came without AD. . Over the last couple of years we would have been doomed with LeBron.
I hope Rob is paying attention to the Mav’s. They made the big trade for Kyrie and are actually a worse team then before the trade because they no longer have any depth. With the time missed due to injuries that AD and LeBron have suffered, I think depth is much important than a third star. We are in a position to bring a lot of our depth back next year. I hope we do.

OKC beat the Clippers for their 8th win in the last 10 games. So much for tanking. They are now the 7th seed. While the Clippers suddenly could be in trouble. PG was helped off the court with what looked like a nasty knee injury. It bent out sideways. Hate to see that but it looks like the Clippers curse continues. Basketball gods did not want them LA. Seems it doesn’t matter what they do.

Aloha,
Tonight was another example of why our path to the playoffs is so precarious. The TWolves beat the Knicks without Anthony Edwards on a night Randle went off for 57. Utah beat the Kings without their best 3 players, while the Kings were at full strength. This ain’t going to be easy.
-
We’re likely to regret many of those games we could and should have won. Still in our power to win but time is running out.
-
We can’t keep treading water hoping that everyone else will drown; eventually we have to do some swimming. The calendar is the only one who’s winning every night.
-
What’s becoming obvious as I watch the nightly battles in the West is that the parity we’ve seen all season is real and is not going away. There really is no dominant team in the West anymore.
The combination of injuries, the play-in tourney, changes in lottery rule for top pick, and young stars emerging has opened the door and we’re likely to see more MLB-like surprise championships.
The only good news for the Lakers is LeBron returning and elevating them above the widespread parity. Kind of like the Suns are hoping with Durant and the Grizzlies with Ja…. The other good news is we should find out pretty soon whether we’re cooked or not.

Same thing happened last season, it’s as if there was an inherent flaw at the organizational level that leads them to believe they can just turn it in when it really matters. Same goes for fans who say inane things like “the season doesn’t start until December” or “training camp doesn’t matter!” Because all those games count exactly the same as ones now, just the perception because of time left is different doesn’t mean the early part of the season doesn’t matter. Heck, Utah has been coasting on its early success for months now. It’s kinda like BA in MLB: hot .400 for the first month and you can hit .250 the rest of the way and look like a solid hitter.
-
Great point, Jamie. We’ve seen these hopes disappear in disappointment the last two seasons. Not hard to imagine it happening again. Very possible.
The big difference is that neither of the rosters we had the past two years could have made a difference if they got into the playoffs. I feel completely differently about this enhanced roster.
It’s not a top five roster in the league but maybe a top five roster in the West with lots of tradeable contracts and far more depth and versatility. Like you have pointed out, it will cost more taxes to keep this roster together and tweak it this summer and next midseason, but it has potential to be turned into a legitimate championship contender.
I think we may end up not guaranteeing Bamba and getting a less expensive backup center to reduce some of the tax increase but I am confident the Lakers did not make these trades without the intent they were going to keep or worst case flip the players they traded for.
I’m betting on Jeanie to protect Reaves and pay $100M in luxury taxes.
I would say whether that happens could depend on next 10 games.

Aloha,
This is such a strange year in the NBA. A slew of injuries to key players have kept most of the west bunched together. I can’t recall a season where so many teams are still fighting for a playoff spot. After all our injuries, a poorly constructed roster and blowing a hand full of games we should have won, it’s amazing we are still in the conversation. The only reason we are is the trades we made.
It is a shame we did not have time for this group to learn to play together. I have liked what I’ve seen from most of them. The biggest issue has been the unfamiliarity that has led to a lot of mistakes you generally see early in a season. But even with the injuries and the new roster we are in every game, which gives me hope that we can get into the playoffs but more importantly I think we are set up for a much better roster next year.
Unlike the last few years, we will have the ability to retain 11 players 12 if you count Pippin who has been great in the G league. Now of course we probably won’t keep them all but we finally have options.
If you count our first and 2nd round draft picks we have we are at around 139 mil. But we have 33.5 mil in non guaranteed contracts. Of that only Vandy at 4.7 mil is a no brainervkeeper. Reed will be cut, freeing up 2 mil. Bamba and Beasley could be cut, guaranteed, traded or renegotiated. In Bamba’s case at 10 mil he is over paid for what he has shown and for a back up. If not traded, I think he will be either cut or renegotiated down. At 16 mil Beasley is not over paid if he rediscovers his shooting stroke. He is over paid if he doesn’t. A lot will be determined down the stretch of the season.
I think our only path to contention is with guys we already have improving. We do have salaries to to trade and draft picks so there are ways to bring in another decent player or two. But we will have to wait and see. We need to guarantee a salary to trade it . So a lot depends on who wants draft picks. And what they have to send back. Our guys all would be expiring deals so that helps.
We do have some things working in our favor. First the only teams with cap space this summer are rebuilding. And there will be another new TV deal in 2024 and it’s expected to be huge, leading to another big jump in the cap. So I think a lot of players will be willing to take a little less on 1+1 deals. So for me here are the things I think we must do.
Resign DLO. He wants to be here and most of the teams that would be interested in him won’t have the cap space to sign him. He is the perfect 3rd option for LeBron. He is a must. 25 to 30 mil will probably get it done.
Guarantee Vandy. Duh!
Resign Austin. Because of the Arenas rule the most he can be offered is a little under 12 mil for the first 2 years. Now a team could give him an offer sheet with a huge back end of 27 mil for the last 2 years but he’s not quite at that level. He wants to stay, so I would offer him 12 per for 2 years and negotiate an option year.while he isn’t the defender that Caruso was, he’s pretty good and much better on offense. I think we will keep him.
Resign Rui. While a little inconsistent I see a lot potential in him. I have heard he’s value is currently between 10 to 12 mil. Give it to him.
Resign Gabriel. We have early bird rights and he will not be that expensive. You just want energy guys on your roster.
Dennis, Lonnie and Troy won’t be expensive but probably hard to keep depending on what we do with the non guaranteed contracts. Of the 3 I would say Dennis is the priority. He is a good back up point guard. When you look at the free agents available, there isn’t many quality back ups available. Would Dennis stay for a 1+1 7 mil Mini MLE? Unless there is a trade available I would at least try.
We could have a solid returning core. Continuity is something we haven’t had in 3 years. Now if we could just have a semi healthy year. One can dream can’t they?
-
Excellent post, Michael. When you consider where we were before the trade deadline and where we are after the trade deadline, it’s hard not to see this year as a critical year in which we made great progress towards erasing major mistakes of the past two or three years and positioning us finally with a great roster, better financial and team building options, and a chance to be one of the best teams in the league next season.
I find myself dismayed at some of the bloggers who feel this year is a disaster and can’t see the immense progress made both in how the front office and ownership was viewing the situation and how they responded with a set of terrific trades that totally changed the dynamic and potential of the Lakers roster.
Whether we can still make any noise this season is still important because we’re committed to this group of players as the core of our team next season. We’re not going to trade LeBron or AD. We’re going to try and win another one or two rings with them as the core. It’s just building a strong and good enough roster around them to allow us to limit their minutes and games and use load management to optimize what we can get from them.
This season was lost by our not making trades this summer. In a way, it was sacrificed as we waited until the right deals came along, knowing fixing the problem for the future was more important than any longshot hopes of winning a ring this year. I still think we have a puncher’s chance but that could vanish in an instant at this point. Lakers essentially have to win out to make it happen this year.
But the big moves that needed to be made were made, both internally in straightening out our front office and getting everybody back on the same page and externally in trading for players who truly give us more size, shooting, and defense. The trades may not have saved this season but they have given us hope that we may once again win #18 in the next 2 or 3 years.
I don’t expect the doomsayers and naysayers to do anything but predict more doom and gloom and then chatter away happily about how ‘right’ they have been about this team. There comes a time when being a fan gives way to being a troll. Seeing a lot of that in this blog and in social media. Makes you wonder why these trolls even care enough to show up.
-
Thanks Tom, the problem that a lot of people don’t seem to grasp is the difficulty of building a team with the salary cap restrictions. We can’t do better than DLO without basically tearing the team apart. And in keeping Austin, Rui and Vandy you have to gamble that they will improve with experience. As we have learned it’s not easy filling out a competitive team in free agency. Even if we let Beasley and Bamba walk, we are still much better after the trade than we were before. We have flexibility now, and a group of young players that can grow together. We can also have some continuity for the first time. It’s hard to win if you turn the roster over every year.

Aloha,
The Rockets was supposed to be a W for us but they didn’t hear that and won. They also didn’t know they were supposed to lose to the Pels and won that game too.
And today the Magic beat the Clippers and the Jazz beat the Celtics. Evidently the Jazz players never received Danny memo to tank. By the way if you haven’t noticed THT has been balling since he became the starting point guard. He has averted 17 and 5.5 assists over the last 10. He has been a big reason why they have been hanging around without Clarkson.
Every game will be hard. I almost wish we had more of the high end teams on the schedule because we seem to get up for them. No one is pulling away so a win streak could still lift us up and we have the talent for that.
Our biggest problem is 6 new players, with guys in and out of the line up, and almost no practice time. we haven’t had enough time to jell as a group. And you can see that unfamiliarity in every game. Yet we are in every game. The hope is we can learn to play together at least enough to win more of these games.
-
I also have never bought into the idea that coaches and players will ever ‘tank’ its just not how they are wired.
-
Injuries, the play-in tourney, and spreading the chance to get the #1 draft pick between worst 3 or 4 teams has essentially become the new formula for amazing parity in the NBA. There is no reason even for the 3 or 4 teams with the worst record to tank.

On a night we could pick up a game on literally everyone we self districted. AGAIN. 12 missed free free throws. And another loss on AD’s shoulders. That’s 3 this year. A missed free throw, a stupid foul on 3 point shot and losing his man for the game winner. He has to be better in the clutch if he’s ever going to be the man.

Aloha,
When a magic traded DLO for a salary dump I thought it was a bad idea. Yes he was immature but you could see the kid had talent. Then Magic compounded that error by drafting Lonzo over Tatum, the staffs choice. Magic has admitted it was a mistake but now we have DLO without the growing pains, entering his prime. I have feeling that DLO isn’t going anywhere this summer. We may have found the perfect 3rd star without the salary or baggage that Kyrie would bring. DLO was our closer with 18 in the 2nd half and put the game away with some huge threes. He is the kind of player that can keep us a float when one of our often injured superstars are out.
Still, he doesn’t get my game ball. That goes to the 2nd unit. The reason the Raptors are struggling to make the playoffs was on full display last night. In a word their 2nd unit sucks. Their starters play more minutes then any other starting unit in the league. However I can’t recall anything as lopsided as the 61 to 12 advantage we had last night. Just look at this
Dennis +32
Austin +26
Rui + 21
Gabriel + 19That’s outrageous. Even more so when you consider all of starters had a minus with the exception of DLO. And when LeBron comes back Troy will be moving to the bench, giving us even more depth. Lonnie didn’t even get in and he’s a pretty good player.
That 3 guard line up of Austin, DLO and Dennis that closed the game, worked like a charm. And when AD came back in, it was over for the Raptors. Their entire defensive scheme revolved around sending 2 or 3 guys at AD, leaving holes all over the place and we took full advantage of that in the last 5 minutes. And having AD and Vandy on the back line made up for some of the height advantage that the Raptors had.
Even though we are only a game out of the 6th seed, it’s not going to be a cake walk getting there without LeBron. But if we are healthy and whole going into the playoffs, this team may surprise the world thanks to the roster Additions and what could be the deepest bench in the NBA.
-
Great post, MIchael. I concur with game ball to bench but I would also give Dlo a game ball. That 4th quarter was Kobe-esque. Like LeBron said: “Man, I love this team.”
We have a rea shot to win 11 or 12 of our last 15 games and to make the 5th or 6th seed. Just keep winning. Tomorrow’s game is important. You know Thibbs is going to try to shut down AD too. Need to see Ham come out with some great counters.

1. KD injured in warm ups. Could be out until the playoffs.
2. Luka has a thigh strain. Could miss a couple of weeks.
3. BI left with an ankle sprain.I can not remember a season where this many high profile players missed so much time to injury. Injury is really the reason the west is so bunched together. The Nuggets and Kings sit at the top of the west and neither have had any major injuries this season.
I watched the KD injury and it was very worrisome. This was no slip. His ankle just gave out. Grade 2 sprain could put him out for regular season. Scary. He may just be breaking down.
Grizzlies, Mavs, Pelicans, and Suns all now face major injury situations. The West is a mess and advantage Lakers. Good chance to make #6 or even #5.

26 turnovers for 46 points and 14 offensive boards. Nothing left to say.

This turnover problem is making me very sick. How can you be so careless with the ball like that when every game counts? Right from the first quarter when I saw all those silly turnovers I started feeling a winnable game slipping through my fingers. You would have thought they will pay attention to detail and curtail that but instead it got worse from there. There is no way to win a game with that many turnovers.
Forget about Ja Morant. How about Tillman with 7 offensive boards? They made him look like a Wilt Chamberlain or a Bill Russell.
Man, this hurts.

He’s going to be reassessed in two weeks. We’ll see after that. Glad to hear that there is no structural damage. If we’re not in the playoffs by the time he’s able to even try to play I think the smart thing is to shut him down. Can’t risk having him, or AD, out for the first part of next season and rehabbing.

Aloha,
LeBron is listed as out against the Griz. I’m no surprised. He was noticeably hobbled. With a back to back coming up, this was the best move. The Griz at home would be hard to beat, even with LeBron. OKC is the team we really need to beat on this trip and we would have a better chance of beating them, even if LeBron doesn’t play.
This team is snake bit. Every time we begin to play well the injury bug returns. First DLO’s weird ankle sprain, just stepping back to inbound the ball and now LeBron. Other guys are going to have to step up and fortunately we have more guys now that can do that. We can’t make the playoffs without LeBron but hopefully we can hold down the fort for a few games.

Aloha,
The year began with a whole slew of desperate calls to trade Russ, to save our season. There were so many different trade proposals floated around out there that it was impossible to keep track of all of them. As it turns out, the trades Rob made were much better than anyone could have imagined and much better than any of the trades that had been discussed. The only question is, were they made in time. It’s a shame that they couldn’t have been made earlier so the team had time to jell. Unfortunately Rob had to wait for the clearance sales to begin, since the asking price for players were high until the last minute.
I guess the thing that impressed me the most was how seamless the team looked in the first game with everyone available. I think it helped that DLO, Beasley and Vandy had played a few years together, leaving the 2nd unit with guys that had played together with the exception of Bamba. I don’t expect it to look that good every game, there will be adjustments that will need to be made and we will be playing some very good teams coming up, but at least we have some hope moving forward.
If we do make the playoffs I think this group is capable of making some noise. But beyond this season I believe we are set up for success at least through the end of Lebrons tenure. We finally landed the perfect PG to play with LeBron. DLO can play on and off the ball. He can run the team or play the 2 and most importantly, he can shoot. He is the perfect 3rd option for this team and should be had for a reasonable contract. And I believe he really wants to be here.
Actually we are in a position to keep everyone except for Dennis, Troy and Lonnie. We do not have bird rights on them and none of them will be playing for the minimum. I would love to keep Dennis but I dont know if he will play for the mini MLE. Everyone else we can keep. For me the must keep players are:
Dlo
Vandy
Rui
Austin
Pippin Jr ( he is in the rising stars and a candidate for rookie of the year and G league MVP. Worth keeping for a 3rd PG on the cheap)
I like Beasley and would not mind him as well but it will really come down to how well he shoots the rest of the way.We also are in a unique position to add a quality free agent in a sign and trade. Two of the best free agents this summer Gary Trent Jr and Jamari Grant also happen to be Klutch clients. In Beasley, Bamba and Reed we have nearly 30 mil in non guaranteed contracts we could send out with picks at the draft. We could swing sign and trades if the their teams didn’t want to lose them for nothing. Or we could use those contracts for other moves. But I have no problem with keeping all of them.
So many options with moves that have been made and for the first time in two years we can actually return a core group that can compete for a championship. The only thing that could ruin it is trading for an overpriced star. Robb wouldn’t do that? Right?
-
Great post, Michael. How much more fun was watching the game Wednesday night than the last two years? I just rewatched the game, the only one I have done that to all season.
The real miracle of what Rob was able to accomplish was he won the war of who got the best players but also aced the battle to win the negotiations, something he has not done well in the past. This time, however, he was the one scroring the extra points.
Getting DLO instead of Conley, somehow getting Ainge to include Vando, landing Hachimura and Bamba for second round picks, getting a team to take Jones with his second year team option, getting top-4 protection on the traded pick that turns into second round pick, making sure we have options to keep anybody we want, positioning the team for a potentially active summer.
Rob gets an A. Now it’s Darvin’s turn to show what he can do.
Lakers starting to smell #18 this year or next.-
There were two things that could not be anticipated. The TWolves were desperate to get Gorbet more involved and he was great with Conley. And Vandy. What was Danny thinking? That one is still a mystery. He probably could have gotten rid of Conley without losing Vandy. Finally a Celtic rewarded the Lakers.
-
-
Michael says: “But I have no problem keeping all of them.” Buba says: keep all of them at all costs unless something better comes along.
Here is Stephen A. Smith’s take on the new look Lakers: “I like D’Angelo Russell on the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 17 points, 45% shooting. I like Malik Beasley on the Los Angeles Lakers. I like this kid [Jarred] Vanderbilt on the Los Angeles Lakers. They’ve improved their shooting. They’ve been able to spread the floor. They’ve improved their defensive prowess,” Smith said.
“If these guys are healthy, the way the West has looked, I can’t summarily dismiss the possibility that the Los Angeles Lakers could make some noise and, dare I say, potentially advance to conference finals…The Lakers, healthy, are going to the (Western Conference) semifinals — automatic, they will win the first round, they’re going to the semifinals, and I’ll give them a 30% chance (of reaching the conference finals),” Smith added.
No doubt the Lakers are an improved team after the trade deadline. The added depth, outside shooting, and the influx of young talent makes them a team to fear, and should help take the load off LeBron James and potentially allow Anthony Davis to get back to his old self.
That alone should make the team more competitive post-All-Star break. And if they bounce back and secure a postseason spot, no one will want to see them in a seven-game series.
-
-
-
Hey, we’ve got the right players in the right positions and 23 games to make up 4 games? Give me a break. If we’re anywhere near as good as I think we could be, we’re a slam dunk more than a long shot to make the playoffs. Then? Anything is possible.
