Man, this is the best Lakers news I’ve heard this month. As I said in my above tweet, Myles Turner is at the head of my list of ten proposed trades to upgrade the Lakers and improve their chances of repeating as NBA champions.
Myles is the prototype modern NBA center who can shoot the three and attack the rim on offense while protecting the rim and switching and challenging shots from players on the perimeter.
With the recent concern about AD’s calf/Achilles, trading for Turner would be a smart move and allow AD to become a full time power forward and avoid the physicality and banging of playing center.
Myles is only 26-years old and the best rim protector in the league, as the Lakers found out when playing the Pacers a few days ago. Turner’s defense allowed the Pacers perimeter defenders to bird dog our ball handlers without worrying about getting beaten by players driving into the paint.
Kuzma, Trezz, and THT would be a lot to give but there is no other center in the NBA who’s a better fit to play next to AD than Myles Turner. If the Lakers really believe DEFENSE wins championships, this is the trade they need to make.
The numbers show pretty clearly that Sabonis and Turner are not a good fit so it makes sense that teams are trying to see if they can make a deal for Myles. Lakers should give up whatever they have to get him. He and AD would put a lid on opponents attacking the rim and allow our perimter defenders to stay with their man and limit open threes.
Finally, unlike Drummond, Turner’s gravity as a 3-point shooter means he can’t be played off the court like McGee and Howard were last season. He’s everything the Lakers hoped Marc Gasol would be and is only 26-years old.
