WIN FOR THE PELICANS!
Too much for too little.
What I don’t get is trading our proven NBA championship winning commodities for players who have succeeded only in flaming out in early rounds, need the ball in their hands and at too high of a cost at that? Why are these trades necessary and we’re making an utter winner out of NOLA. Ought we not to improve more with a trade and not regress?
To keep up with the Clippers, Bucks, Heat, Nggets, Celtics, Warriors, and Nets who are all wheeling and dealing to build teams that can beat the Lakers. Look back when we started the last three dynasties: a threepeat and two repeats. We faced improved competition each time and won only because we improved too.
…but never traded the core of players that got us there. We cycled through a bunch of quality vets on minimum deals, one year contracts and players off the scrap heap. That was the recipe for both runs in the 2000’s, even more so for the 80’s squad.
I will say that I am waaaaaay more in favor of trading for Jrue than for CP3 for a multitude of reasons. Plays better off the ball, younger, has chemistry with at least one of our stars, as good (if not better) of a defender. Cheaper, too.
But it’s hard to see NOLA sending us 2 superstars in subsequent years for Green, Kuzma, and Bradley and a pick. I wouldn’t offer more than that.
True, Jamie. It’s always been those vet stars, like CP3. The difference this time, which is why we will offer the kitchen sink for Holiday, is we need stars to pair with AD after LeBron is gone.
I also agree that Jrue is by far the better option, even though the cost is much greater, because he can span the LeBron and post LeBron Lakers’ eras.
I also agree the feasibility index makes a CP3 trade much more likely, although I don’t see Griff as being a guy who wouldn’t trade to the Lakers because of AD. And there is something to argue that the depth the Lakers trade offers has great intangible benefits.
CP3 isn’t on a vet minimum deal. I’m talking about the Mitch Richmond, JR Rider, Ron Harper’s of yore. CP3 is too pricey and doesn’t solve problems down the line. Rondo is better, cheaper, fits smoother and has won it all. Chris? Notsomuch.
Agreed on the intangibles and that’s a door that swings both ways: good for us or someone else which is why I’m not in a rush to make deals during the shortest off season ever. NOLA has Jrue under contract for this season and, given the economic climate, he’s likely (not certain) to opt into his last year for $26 mil. If someone blows NOLA away with a deal we likely wouldn’t be able to match, given our assets. better to wait and see what the landscape is come whenever they set the deadline for…Apri-lish I’m guessing?
Another player I like that you’ve mentioned is Baynes. I’d let Dwight and Markieff walk if we could sign him or a similar player. Then you just focus on re-siging the guard corp, see if Bradley opts in and gauge the S&T market prior to the reboot.
I’m sure there are a plethora of moves that Rob and Co. have on a board we haven’t even touched upon, as well.
Good point, Jamie. These are the kinds of convos we need to have on the podcasts. Great back and forth with dissents and agreements.
I love Baynes and he’s in the article I’m working on right now, Lakers top five trade options. Can defend, great screen setter, and 3-point shooter. He and Boogie or Dwight would be a realistically attainable center tandem.
Just out of curiosity, did Ingram fall out of the rotation? I like Kuz and Josh but Brandon is after all an all star and most improved player.
I missed that. Just copied from Eric Pincus stuff on Basketball Insiders. He left BI off because he is a restricted free agent. I should have added him back in. I think he was starting at the 3 ahead of Hart. Thanks.
