It would be a surprise if JaVale declined his player option but it would enable him to control where he plays if he thinks the Lakers are likely to trade him.
Made money on the deal, mzybe he wants go home to Detroit? Most likely he’s downsizing from a nigh-unusable party-pad to a more modest, family-man abode. Maybe closer to Inglewood where he has a studio.
