Hmm. Maybe trade JaVale to them for nothing to clear more money for Gasol if he really wants to come to LA.
LT, do you know what kind of Cap space we have for next season if Giannis?
Cap will be $112M. LeBron, AD, and KCP will be $84M. Renouncing everybody else, including Schroder, Caruso, Kuzma, etc, and allowing $14.4M for 9 roster slots, we would only have $13.6M.
Bottom line, we can’t sign a third superstar with cap space. Only way is to trade for one on the verge so we get his Bird rights and then can go over cap to sign him.
That’s why we finally signed KCP to a multiple year deal. The Giannis dream is impossible with the cap being depressed by coronavirus pandemic. New reality.
The other way is collecting pieces to trade for a superstar before he gets maxed, which is what we are doing now. Then you trade for 125% of what you send and then use Bird rights to go over the cap to max him. E.g., Oladipo. Salary $21M. We send out $17M to get him. Then use Bird rights to go over cap to max him. That’s one reason why we traded for Harrell. We’re collecting trading chips for next offseason.
