Frank Vogel signaled for timeout. With his Lakers trailing in the fourth quarter of a seesaw second game of the Western Conference finals, Vogel positioned himself in the center of his team and implored his players to draw inspiration from the ebony uniforms they were wearing.
“He said, ‘Look at those jerseys you have on,’” Anthony Davis recalled later that night.
The message worked. Davis sealed the Lakers’ comeback victory with a dramatic, buzzer-beating 3-pointer, and when he turned in celebration toward the Lakers bench, he shouted the name of the man the jerseys honored.
