The Lakers’ offense sputtered on opening night, mustering just 109 points on 46.9% shooting (31% from 3) against the Clippers, before exploding in their next two games. L.A. hung 138 points on Dallas in its next game, having three guys score 20 or more and five reach double digits, and then 127 points on Minnesota — in a game that Anthony Davis sat out — with six players scoring 10 or more. — McMenamin

Frank Vogel: ‘This is what I hoped’

Coaches have a way of turning negatives into positives. So when Frank Vogel announced on Sunday morning that Anthony Davis would miss that night’s game, he quickly turned the page.

“We want to take advantage of our depth,” he said.

Twelve hours later, after the Lakers had dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-91 with Davis watching in street clothes, Vogel reflected on his earlier statement.

“This is what I hoped we would be,” he said.

It was an emphatic message delivered in response to the first test of the Lakers’ depth this season, and it came in just the third game. This is a year that promises to be the most unpredictable in league history. Teams will need to find ways to overcome the absences of players sidelined by sickness or the league’s health and safety protocols.

“This is the out-of-the-bubble, pandemic season,” Vogel said. “This is different than the bubble season, so to speak. We’ve been talking about this since day one. The expectation and the norm for us, for most of the league, is that there will be guys out. We just have to make sure we understand that’s the norm and don’t let it slow us down at all.”

Thanks, Jamie. What I like about this win is that they were finally able to limit the turnovers. If they keep that going, I don’t care if it is Utah, Dallas, Boston in the next stretch of games coming, they stand a chance to win. Our biggest problem has been turnovers.

What I really don’t understand from the coaching staff is this: why was Mckinnie benched after having done so well in the few minutes he was on the floor? The team looked fatigued and tired, but Mckinnie came in and looked fresh and active. He brought some energy to the team after missing the previous night’s game. But instead, was benched the rest of the game. I don’t get that.
