    5 Things: Lakers Start Flat

That’s not even close to the haul they’ll get. Should read “Best Trade the Lakers Can Make In-Season” lol. They’re going to get better than that, should he ask out now, guaranteed.

According to ESPN (so dubious, at best) the Knicks were the team he’d go to this summer. Evidently that is no longer the case and you’d have to expect Milwaukee will do their utmost to get enough draft assets to hit the reset button now. That’s not our offer, which is admittedly the “kitchen sink” offer we could put out there.

Honestly, for the Lakers, it would be better for him to have waited until the summer when we’d have 3 more picks to add outright along with the kitchen sink. Could have balanced the contracts better by signing and trading Rui and Reaves.

    Top 5 in-season suitors:
    -Bulls
    -Heat
    -Clippers
    -Raptors
    -Pistons

    Top 5 summer suitors:
    -Bulls
    -Heat
    -Raptors
    -Pelicans
    -Celtics

All of those teams can trade more draft picks outright and also cobble together the $$$ to make it work.

    • Luka’s gonna fill the stat sheet like he always does but so far it hasn’t led to a ton of playoff wins. Hard to win an MVP if we end up with the 6th seed. I watched 4 contenders from the West on Tues night and we looked like we didn’t belong. Vando is so bad on offense that it might detract from his impact on defense (which was damn near zero).

      • I don’t worry about Vando’s offense in the regular season and he’s a matchup based player in the playoffs, anyway. I’d prefer him over Gabe just while LeBron is out to help set a tone an early season defensive identity. I don’t think he played in the 2nd half much when the game got away from us but I could be wrong.

        • On offense we’re playing against an extra defender because he’ll be totally ignored. Dude can barely handle easy catches directly under the hoop and it seems to be getting worse. Even when he gets a steal or deflection on defense, now he’s leading the break the other way and I’m just waiting to see how he’s gonna fumble away the opportunity.

Lakers Cannot Waste Prime Luka Waiting For Answers They Know!

The good news is Luka Doncic’s already taking his game to another level. The bad news is the Lakers are wasting prime Luka and risking falling far behind waiting for answers they already know instead of taking action.

The Lakers knew they were an elite 3&D starting small forward and quality backup center from being a legitimate championship contender before LeBron James got injured and should have resolved those issues offseason. Pelinka’s failure to fix the Lakers’ roster last summer was inexcusable. It left the Lakers vulnerable to major size issues should LeBron get injured and now forces them again to make and integrate a big midseason trade.

In the meantime, JJ Redick is going to have to make some changes to his starting lineup and rotation. To start, He needs to replace Vincent with Smart, as Gabe simply does not have the defensive size or length to start. The challenge is losing LeBron leaves the Lakers without a legitimate plus defender at small forward or power forward. Last night, Butler dominated Reaves at small forward as Kuminga abused Hachimura at power forward.

The plan to give last year’s roster a 20 to 25 game test run before making a trade should have been flushed the instant Pelinka learned LeBron had a sciatica issue and would likely miss at least the first month of the season. Nor did Rob need last night’s game to figure out what was going to happen when the Lakers were forced to go small against the veteran Warriors or what will happen when they play a bigger team like the Timberwolves.

Nor does Rob need 20 more games to know he must make a trade right now not only to bolster the Lakers until LeBron gets back but also to finally wean the team from over-relying on their legendary 41-year old superstar.

    • Well that didn’t take very long after all. From “Master Class” to “inexcusable” in a matter of weeks. Rob won’t move as fast as you hope, unfortunately. He’s not a “shoot from the hip” kinda GM. Other than the Luka and Russ trades, he’s never made a midseason deal and those were “absolutely have to make a deal now” trades.

I do start to wonder if we were all overly optimistic in terms of the motivation for guys playing for $$ notion. Could be an issue that results in conflicting agendas, especially with LBJ out.

In the end, we’ll have to settle for the players we have at the moment. They’ll give Smart some runway to work himself into NBA shape and get up to speed on what we’re running. They’ll give Reaves every chance to prove himself (and will likely hold onto him until Draft Day). Rui is a pretty big question mark, honestly.

At any rate, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a magical trade that can fix it all because
      A) there isn’t one
      B) Rob just isn’t that guy, he’s not decisive…

    • Trades are not going to help. There isn’t anyone we can afford that would help that much. What we need is better communication and better schemes. The Warriors hunted Gabe with Jimmy ad he just did not have the size and strength to contain him. Also they continued to get the switch they wanted and had Ayton, chasing kuminga half the night while Rui, who is much more mobile checking Draymond or Horford. This is the biggest problem with the switch everything defense. It doesn’t work without the right personal. You could switch AD on just about anyone, Ayton, not so much. Same with a small guard like Gabe. They will exploit the mismatches.

    • Nobody’s trading an impact player at this point of the season. It would’ve happened over the summer…if at all. “Elite” (hell..even just above average) 3 & D guys are a valued commodity.

    Self Inflicted Loss

    Aloha,

Well that was ugly. With as bad we played it is a wonder we didn’t lose by 30. Just a few points.

While on one hand I understand the Lakers being cautious during preseason to reduce injuries this team looked like a team that didn’t play together much. They looked sloppy and all the turnovers were the result.

Can there be too much Luka? Yes The ball wasn’t moving as Luka and Austin as well pounded the ball all night. The other guys hardly touched it. That resulted in a lot of ball watching from the other guys. It’s well known that players play better on both sides of the ball when they are engaged in the offense.

All those missed free throws killed us. GS made 10 more free throws and only took a couple more than us.

Our 3 point shooting sucked. Austin and Lucka combined for 3-15. Unacceptable. Rui shot 50% from 3 in the preseason and was 3-6 last night. He is our best 3 point shooter and it’s up to JJ to make sure he gets more looks.

What is it about 3rd quarters with this team?

The Warriors hunted Gabe all night with Butler. That’s just a miss match. I would have preferred Smart or Vando in the starting line up. Gabe did his best but he was just too small to contain Butler.

We better find some bench scoring. The Warriors bench killed us.

It’s apparent that we really need LeBron back ASAP. His playmaking alone would have made a huge difference.

    • Great post, not really anything to even mildly quibble over. Gabe with the starters weakens the bench scoring. Offense is too rudimentary even for the modern NBA. Can’t expect Luka to do it all. Reaves had a crappy game. Flush it and move on.

      • We say that flush it stuff far too often…before you know it, we’ve flushed so many games that we’re fighting for our lives to stay outta the play-in. Marinate in it and figure out what the hell is going on. A great man once said “I never lose; I either win or I learn”.

Without LeBron, Forward Quickly Becomes Lakers’ Weakest Position

He’s been pine riding for a couple weeks now and Kleber is getting his minutes. Maxi brings a different vibe off the bench but, like Vando, can’t continue to pass up open shots. Folks like to rip on Vanderbilt for his offense but I’ve never seen him air ball a finger roll at the rim…he’s also shooting better from three than Smart is. So either it’s a run where the staff told him he’s riding pine while they look at something or, more likely, Redick just isn’t the right coach for him. It happens, Vando, in the right system, is solid. In what we’re doing these days he needs to hit the corner three and cut for open layups.

5 Things: The Luka Era Truly Begins

I know, I know…we acquired The Don last season. But between the chaos Luka went through after being surprisingly traded midseason, the lack of practice time with his new team, returning from a serious calf injury, his potential contract extension looming over all of it and just the regular hullabaloo of the NBA, the Luka Era felt rushed and never fully blossomed. No longer. Especially with LeBron starting the campaign on the shelf getting his body right for the NBA, the Luka Era in LA is here.

I love how much effort Tom puts into these roster machinations. It’s doubly fun when none of them even come close to fruition.
    1. The Lakers have added some intriguing pieces this summer, mainly De’Andre Ayton and Marcus Smart, although Jake LaRavia’s potential is quite intriguing. A lot is riding on how quickly Smart and Ayton acclimate themselves to their new team. It won’t surprise me if Smart tops out around 60 or so total games played, maybe more like something in the mid to high 50’s. Ayton should play most nights, barring injury, and his acclimation already seems like it will take the longest. It’s been very hit or miss between Ayton and Luka, lots of missed lobs which is odd for someone with such great feel around the rim in Ayton and excellent passing skills in Luka. Hopefully it’s just a question of getting on the same page and learning each other’s tendencies and preferences.
    2. Austin Reaves will be an All Star for the Lakers. He won’t be traded, they’ve made that abundantly clear over the past 3 season, hard to see them just bailing on that for anything less than a true upgrade (another All Star) and with our solitary draft pick it seems highly unlikely. As such, it’s been fun watching Luka and Austin get acclimated to life without LeBron (more on that guy down yonder), although the defense of the Lakers (in general) has been subpar. Luka will certainly make the All Star team, heck LeBron will probably be a top 5 vote getter regardless of how many games he misses, but I think Reaves has a goal in mind of making that team and upping his summer earning power. More power to him if he can make it happen, although it is conceivable he could price his way off the Lakers. Barring some unforeseen circumstances, I find that hard to believe. I will say that, if the Lakers feel that there is a true ceiling they have in terms of keeping Reaves, they should get true clarity on that internally because letting him walk for nothing next summer would be a high crime, to be sure.
    3. The Lakers bench needs help. Big time help. It’s one of the reasons I was surprised to see Vincent getting the starting nod when our bench so very clearly lacks any kind of scoring punch. Putting the ball in Bronny and Dalton’s hands is a disaster right now, honestly I trust Bronny more than Dalton at this exact moment in time. I like the Smart/Vando/LaRavia trio but they could use someone to make shots. Hayes isn’t a threat outside the paint, our young players are either struggling (see above) or haven’t played (Adou Thiero…with nary an update, either). While I can already see and hear the calls for moving Reaves to the bench it’s just not going to happen. Better, and more likely, to ask for Reaves and Luka’s minutes to be intelligently staggered until LeBron gets back. As it stands today I won’t be too surprised if Gabe ends up back on the bench simply because we need another somewhat reliable scorer to add some punch
    4. Team looking healthy, other than LeBron. Vando looks a lot more active, I expect him to be scoring better in a month or so, as well. He seems to start slowly and build from there. He’s already finishing around the rim better and the X-factors he brings are alive and well. Luka looks great and, if Hayes is cleared to play, the only Laker I’m left truly wondering about is Adou Thiero. Not getting much in the way of actual info, he looks good when he gets in front of a camera but has yet to suit up so…we wait. Which is unfortunate because I could easily see Dalton’s minutes going to Thiero and that having a positive impact on both ends, potentially. I feel for Knecht but it’s clear to me that he’s still completely in his head. It truly may require a change of scenery next season.
    5. That LeBron guy. If I could get word to LeBron it would be just this: playoffs. Watching how Caruso was handled by OKC last season reveals the blueprint for managing LeBron. We shouldn’t need him for the regular season as much as in years past. We will desperately need him in the playoffs if we want to hang another banner. As such, the entire goal of his regular season ramp up should be with that in mind. So if he doesn’t play until 2026, and as long as we’re keeping pace with the top 4 teams or so, I’m cool with it. I get that it’s a huge amount of cap space to be waiting on but the end goal has to be the first and most important goal, in this scenario. Whenever he does play more records will fall, most of them tied to longevity, and hurrah for all of that. Those all fall to the wayside, for me, when it comes to locking in on the goal that matters most: the playoffs.

Why Lakers’ Starting Lineup Needs Marcus Smart’s Defensive Tenacity

Lakers’ second-year head coach JJ Redick had to be smiling and thanking his lucky stars watching 31-year old Marcus Smart looking as spry and athletic on defense as the 27-year old version that had won a DPOY.

The Lakers desperately need better defense from their starting lineup and it’s obvious after Smart’s defensive performance against the Kings that he’s exactly what JJ Redick needs to turbo charge the starting lineup’s defense. Vincent will still start Tuesday night vs. Golden State as Redick probably wants to make sure Smart can sustain a high level of play and stay healthy. Once he shows that, Redick will quickly move him into the starting lineup.

What makes Smart a better option as the Lakers’ fifth starter than Vincent or Vanderbilt is his experience as an elite starter on a championship team and a defensive skillset that earned him three All-Defensive team honors.
While Smart’s only an inch taller than Vincent at 6′ 3,” his 6′ 9″ wingspan and 220 lbs enable him to defend forwards as well as guards. Unlike Vando, Smart is good enough on offense that he can’t be played off the court.

When you look at the Lakers three candidates to be the fifth starter until LeBron returns, Smart is the only legitimate NBA starter quality player. Vincent’s a great shooter and Vando has great size but they’re not starters.
The Lakers need their fifth starter to be a game changer and tone setter, not just another role player. They specifically need a defensive superstar, which is exactly what a healthy and hungry Marcus Smart could be.

JJ Redick has already walked back Gabe Vincent being the starter beyond the home opener so don’t be surprised if he changes his mind again and makes Marcus Smart the fifth starter vs. Warriors on Tuesday night.

    • Maybe. Sounds like Coach Reddick learned a lesson: trying to cement a lineup that:
      A) Isn’t healthy to start

      • B) Has a lot of new parts combined with guys who have now played together for a couple years now.

        a

        • It would be one thing if training camp lasted longer than 45 minutes, but the first month is now, for lack of a better concept, extended training camp. Smart played like 45 total minutes of preseason, in the end I could give a fig if he starts, comes off the bench, or whatever: we need him ready in the playoffs. Same as LeBron. Reddick has already learned one of the lessons I wanted to see him learn: don’t blab your “plan” to the media.
