The NBA has to change the rule to eliminate the "smart" play of fouling up 3. Should be 1 shot and the ball if you foul outside the 3-point line up 3 with shot clock off. Turned an amazing game into a FT contest late, robbed us of a great finish.— Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA) May 27, 2025
This is the first rule they need to change. How they do it, I’m not sure. I’ve heard some crazy ideas from the playground, like team behind gets the ball out after every basket during last 2 minutes. But seriously, one option w/b to call the offending team for an intentional four, which is 2-shots plus the ball out of bounds.
The other rule is offensive players like SGA getting called totally different than guys like LeBron and Luka. Part of it is when the offensive player causes the contact on a defender who is not in a correct defensive position. Fear of that could be enough to make teams not foul intentionally in that situation. That’s the best option I have heard. Although I do love the idea of the last 2 minutes giving the ball to the team that’s behind after each basket. That would be fun.
When SGA veers into a defender, he should be treated just like LeBron and Luka are. The contact is not treated as a foul and the offensive player is given the advantage of his physicality by not having an offensive foul called but the defensive player is not penalized for not being in a legal defensive position because the offensive player changed direction to cause the contact which is foul hunting.
Why? It’s the NBA’s fault some team couldn’t score the rock better for the first 47 minutes of the game? It’s ideas like this that lead to runner on second to start extra innings.
It’s sports. Sometimes you lose because you weren’t good enough. That’s it. Make a free throw in the 2nd quarter. Don’t miss so many layups in the 3rd. Take the uncontested midrange jumper in the 1st…last thing we need is another ridiculous rule…
